No, jurors say nothing until deliberation basically.

What were the details of the case? Did he go to prison?

Defendant was a drug dealer who killed a customer because the customer didn't have $30 to pay for crack he bought. I didn't hang around, but we determined he was guilty of first degree murder, so I assume he will go to prison for a long time.

Defendant was guilty of first degree murder.

Give us a rundown.

Defendant sent two teenage runners to go deliver crack to a guy and get $30 from him in exchange. He didn't have the money, so the runners go to the dealer, who comes back with his runners to get his money. He shot the customer in the head after an argument where the customer says, "If you're gonna kill me, kill me."

Prosecutor was a reasonably attractive mid 30s girl. One of the jurors was a girl around my age, but married.

Additional deets: We didn't have an actual gun found, but a picture of a gun matching the description given by his two runners were found on the killer's phone. Killer made a bunch of calls from jail that sounded incredibly guilty. "I got dudes snitchin on me," etc..

Parking was free and reasonably plentiful despite being a major metropolitan center. Food was not free, but there were quality places within walking distance.

Horrifying. I was genuinely unsure about how I felt going into closing arguments, but despite the potential holes in the evidence, the totality of it presented a convincing case. I am quite sure he did it.

Yeah that sounds about right. It's a very unnerving feeling. I personally hope I never have to do it again.

Seems pretty open and shut?

Mostly, 1st or 2nd degree was something the jury mulled over a lot, but premeditation has a low bar to argue.

The prosecution was built largely around the testimony of the two runners, who were quite bad as witnesses in a lot respects. They contradicted their depositions, made inconsistent statements in the years since the murder, had criminal histories, and didn't do well when grilled by the defense. If all we had to go on was their testimony, this guy would be free.

Yeah. If you've been on 4chan, you will have seen worse. It was a guy with a small bullet hole over his eye and some blood.

Does the jury have any say in how short/long the sentences are?

it's been a while since I did jury duty but I'm 99% sure that's up to the judge/prosecution/defense

I think a Jury can determine if a sentence is allowed to include the death penalty, and can award damages based on some criteria outlined by the lawyers.

Nope

The two eyewitnesses that went with him to pick up the drug money. They positively ID'd him. A third guy, the victim's roommate/fellow crackhead, also ID'd the defendant with 60-70% certainty, which by itself means jackshit, but matters in context of the other two witnesses.

It took like half an hour to unanimously find him guilty with 1 holdout and a few people who were very weak in their commitment to his guilt, but we really did hem and haw about whether it was first or second degree.
