"Officials in White County, Tennessee, have given inmates the option of ending their jail sentence early if they voluntarily agree to have a vasectomy or birth control implant.

General Sessions Court Judge Sam Benningfield, who signed a standing order in May, said he made the decision to ensure that inmates would not be “burdened with children,” according to WTVF.

The program works like this: Both sexes can volunteer to participate, which is free of charge. Women are given a Nexplanon contraceptive implant, which works for up to four years, in their arm. The Tennessee Department of Health will provide vasectomies for men who volunteer for the program. Those who participate will receive 30 days of credit toward their jail time."

This is a great idea. Part of the reason there are so many criminals, is because criminals keep having kids.

I think they should offer some sort of incentive to people living in poor areas, with high birth rates as well. It would go a long way to ending a lot of society's troubles.

Should be better incentives, like 25% off your existing conviction, or some cash rewards. It would be interesting to see if the incentives are different for the crime (like for unpaid child support cases, it's like 50% off).

Pretty much. That, and vasectomies are easily reversed and have a strange habit of just not taking anyways. That's why they tell you to still use a condom for six month to a year afterwards, with sperm checks every few months.

I sort of agree since it isn't mandatory but psychologically I can see the issue. It may be voluntary but it's also is telling people who are locked up and want to be free "do this and I'll let you out sooner". In the moment they see freedom. A few years later they may regret it.

Is this only for sex offenders or are they seriously going to take time off of a nonviolent offender's sentence if he agrees never to father children? If it's the latter, I understand it's voluntary, but is it really ethical?

It's not permanent. You can have it reversed easily.
