And in what you linked it clearly states that FMA takes place mostly in a proxy central European country.


The characters from Amestris have obvious traits of:
Caucasian (dark hair and eyes, light skin)
Middle Eastern (brown hair and eyes (red eyes for the ishvalan), tanned skin)
Nordic (blonde hair and blue eyes, light skin)

Then you got Xing which is basically a proxy of China.

It was a huge plot point for the Ishvalan War that the blue eyed Amestrians were exterminating the red eyed Ishvalans.

If they've already established the setting and character traits but then just throw that out the window in favour of an all Asian cast sure go ahead. But I best not hear about white washing an anime again.

Not looking forward to this. Maybe I'm just burned out by Japanese media recycling actors/actresses, but none of the cast fits their part. It's going to be another movie that relies on effects rather than actors who make sense in the roles, and we know that the Japanese movie industry is behind in effects.

Guys, chill. It's a Japanese-made movie, they barely give movies enough budget for non-laughable CGI for most, and you're sitting here demanding a white cast? I don't want them grabbing a random tourist off the street so he can play Ed. Happy with the cast as it is.

I'm assuming that wasn't directed at my comment, but just in case - I don't expect a white cast, but would have liked to see a cast of Japanese that fit their parts.

I tend to ignore live action anime shows from Japan because 99% of them are garbage. The only one I actually liked was the Ruroni Kenshin live action, but only for the action scenes. They really got to do something about their campy acting because it only works for comedy scenes, not actual dramatic scenes when you're suppose to feel for the characters.

I think it's fine that they are Japanese since it's a Japanese movie, but do people really think the characters in FMA were Asian?

They have a plotline where ling and lan fan come from the east and the asian characters are drawn differently

I know I'm in the minority here...but ever since the first teaser I've thought this looked terrible. It just doesn't look like something that translates well from anime to live action.

That goes for every anime to live action adaptation to me. The styles, in terms of characters, are just too different and it's a trick to shift my mind enough to accept that. I've gotten better with it, I liked Death Note, and this one looks good to me too.
