So my friend had a Galaxy S5, and recently upgraded to an S8. And she's complaining to me how the speech recognition just isn't as good as the old S5, how it always gets words wrong. I dismiss her and just assume she's dumb.

But anyway, I happen to have an S5, so next time I see her, we do a test. I hold up both her S8 and my S5, and hit the speech to text buttons at the same time, and say a bunch of stuff. Lo and behold, she's right. My S5 wrote perfectly, and the S8 was riddled with errors. We tested it with her talking, me talking, several phrases. Over and over again, the S8 ended up with all kinds of mistakes, the S5 did it mostly flawless.

So the question is, what the fuck?

Why does the supposedly better, newer tech suck?

I know some newer phones with the speech to text ability have like a speech learning feature, where over time it gets used to how you speak--there isn't a setting or something in the phone settings that you can change or alter/turn on to solve this problem?

I've used iPhones since 2007, and they do text to speech very very well, default, out of the box ever since it's been implemented, so I don't know about the galaxy series of phones.

They could have went cheap with the mic on the S8 so it's not picking things up clearly.
