What was it like? How bad was it? How long did you have them and how did you get rid of them?

Yes.
It was an endless hell.
It ranged from almost non-existant to extremely bad.
Like five or six years?
Repeatedly getting rid of furniture and slapping DE around the place like it was Febreze.

We get them at work every now and then. Pretty much crank the heat and find some decent spray or something.

I got them in Taiwan but managed to isolate my and clean my stuff by the time I got back home, so I was clean again. Also I saw one on my bed when I visited manhattan one time, so I changed rooms and managed to be safe.

Yes about a year.

Just about ready to burn the apartment down.

Argued with my land lord about who has to the exterminator, not to mention he didn't want me to bring one in the first place.

He payed. Took about 5 or 6 visits to end them.

Nope: In northen Europe bed bugs are almost not existend.
When it happen, people bring it back from holydays in warmer countries. But they (bedbugs) don't like the northern climate. So they die out pretty fast.

bed bugs are just the funniest little thing right now. they are returning en masse. thousand and thousands of cases popping up, people on forums everywhere begging for help. the treatments out there range from largely ineffective to extremely expensive and the media isn't covering this at all, everyone's just pretending it's not happening because it's a big social no-no to admit you have an infestation.

there's one company, literally one, that's actively doing anything about it, and nobody even knows who they are.

they've created a perfect and foolproof method of elimination that's safe for pets and humans and can clear an infestation, no matter how bad, in just two weeks, usually less. and pesticide regulators are sitting on their hands instead of turning the green lights on. it's just like... why. what. no. it should be out. it should be everywhere. the epidemic is growing out of all control, hundreds of thousands of homes infested and a good chunk of them probably don't even know yet.

you don't 'get them every now and then' it's the same infestation. they can go for six months without food and it takes temperatures upwards of 100+ degrees for hours to actually kill em. but when they feel like they're being attacked or noticed they go to ground and their hiding places are incredibly difficult to find even harder to treat.

don't make the mistake of thinking you've ever gotten rid of them.

diatomaceous earth is an effective treatment but it takes a long time and has to be done properly and repeatedly and it makes your property look a mess till it's done. it kills bedbugs by clinging to the wax on their shells and effectively dehydrating them, killing them. but they have to walk through it. plus it can be hazardous for humans and animals to breath so application has to be done carefully.

Apartment next to us had them, we got damn lucky they didn't cross over. Cheap ass landlord did a chemical treatment then moved new people in. Sold the place later, and the new land lord paid for two or three heat treatments that actually solved the problem.

I accidentally killed a fly with it.
I left some in a bowl and a fly must have landed in it. Anyway the next day the body was there but the spirit was not.

A method that helped me, and im proud to say it was my own invention (proud because you cannot explain how good it is to sleep knowing you did something right to not get bit)

I knew the bed and box were clean. The sheets and pillows too. So they were coming up from somewhere else

I taped the legs of the bed frame with the adhesive facing outward. Double sided tape works too. Any bug crawling up was caught.

Interesting

Only works if your bed is in the middle of the floor. But also works if you just set your bed legs in a basin of water or DE.

Thankfully I've never had to deal with bed bugs

Twice.

The first time from renting some furniture (never doing that again)

The second was from a relative that was known for being unclean. They sent one of the kids a blanket that they kept in their place for awhile before giving it to them gor Christmas. The bugs came right along and it took up to 4 months to get rid of.

Oh, well those are the only times I ever experienced them. It may not be due to cleanliness, but they certainly aren't very quick to call exterminators.

it was bad. took us like 3 years to finally be done with them. i routinely had to take apart the furniture in my room and soak everything in alcohol. one time i turned my room into an artificial hotbox too and got it up to 110 degrees

they kept coming back. wasnt fun. just burn your house down and start over somewhere else if you dont like them

Yes, a couple of years ago. Cleaned the shit out of everything, filled in all the cracks in my walls, and put DE all around the baseboards, all over my box spring, all over my bed frame, and basically just everywhere.

That helped keep them at bay until the winter was over but I would still run into one or two here and there. Once the summer came, they seemingly died off because I haven't seen another once since. I think that might have been the only benefit of having no central air in Texas.
