I mean, in terms of the quality of the keyboard and the typing experience, of course they're a downgrade.

But in terms of the form factor and quality of the phone itself, absolutely not. Those slide out keyboard phones were all pieces of shit, way thicker than they needed to be, and the hinges or slides always got gunked up with lint and shit from your pockets and caused problems eventually. I think the tradeoff was worth it.
