I do enough highway driving that I'm always paranoid about being stranded in the middle of nowhere because my rust bucket of a car broke down.

So one of the first things I did when I got a job was purchase a vehicle.

Though granted, I did learn a good life lesson with the first vehicle I purchased... Do not finance a used vehicle. I paid it off in 3 years and I still paid so much in interest that I was almost better off buying new.

This car is 5 years 0% financing so I didn't even bother putting any money down on it, as I'm just better off investing the money than using it to pay off the car.

i purchased a used vehicle (my volvo) for $8k and my interest rate was only 6% from my local bank. that was when i was 20 and had no cosigner.

now i can finance a vehicle through my work credit union for a 1.99% interest rate. so i don't have the same experience as you.

For me it was 7% on about 18k for a vehicle that was only 1 year old.

Had I let that go the full 7 years of the contract, that would have been around 23k, which really isn't all that far off from what that same car was worth brand new, even if I only got about 0.99% (which seems to be what pretty much every dealer here will give you on a new vehicle).

And I need a new fuel pump but I Googled and there was a recall for fuel pumps on my year and model car in Arizona and Nevada.

I called Volvo and they said my car is eligible.

So I'm about to get an $800 repair for free lmao

the dealership said my car doesn't have an open recall but he said he can get approval from his district manager to replace the fuel pump under warranty and that he's never had that issue declined because volvo likes to pay for "safety issues"

This gave me a flashback to something I saw on TV in... I think it was late 80s or early 90s...
I think it was a comedy or some sketch program like SNL. I think it was about a group of people that survived "the end of the world" (might have been a comet crashing) and one guy survived because he was in his Volvo. How old are your tires? Look at the DOT number on the sidewall, the last 4 digits are the week and year they were made. Sitting for long periods of time is awful for tires, it bends the steel cords and makes them more prone to separate/blow out. Sitting in the sun makes them dry rot faster too

They are only a couple years old. The mechanic said they are fine but there are spots on them that are flat from sitting that will need to round back out from driving that I'll need to be aware of.

They're probably not going to round back or ride as smooth as before. You might be fine, just be on the lookout for any sudden shaking or pulling to one side, especially in the Arizona summer heat, that's a sign of separation

I'll keep an eye out to see if I need new tires. They look fine. I don't see any cracking or anything like that. The tread is also good.

any books you recommend (besides car manual) to know more car secrets like the DOT on tires? did not know that but it's extremely helpful to know especially when car shopping

A lot of dealers have automatic washes now and will usually drive a vehicle through it when they're done.
