Do you like the process of self-evaluations in the workplace?

Most companies have yearly employee reviews. You sit down with your manager, they list areas where your strengths are but most importantly they highlight your weaknesses and go over ways to improve them. More and more companies are adding self-evaluations to the mix. You are given a list of questions and must score and comment on yourself. These scores are then compared to the ones your manager gives you during the final evaluation.

Do you like and approve of this practice or not? Why?

If you Google this subject you'll find hundreds of articles praising this practice. Though personally I suspect they were written by people trying to push the practice. I hate self-evaluations. To me they are another opportunity for shame and humiliation.

They put you in a terrible position at first. You don't to oversell or undersell yourself. People like me with low self-esteem are more inclined to do the latter. You can't give yourself average scores across the board either or else they may think that you aren't taking the evaluation seriously. But the worst part is during the final evaluation itself. It is very humiliating to see your manager give you a low score in an area where you gave yourself a high score. I can easily picture my manager looking at my scores before the meeting and either bursting out into a fit of laughter or shaking their head and thinking, "This guy is delusional!"

At the end of the day, your self-evaluations are meaningless because what your manager thinks is all that really matters. You can try arguing their points but you'll never get the scores changed. I might be more accepting of the practice if our self-evaluation results were kept private, even from our managers. But the way it is now, I hate the practice.

Your thoughts?

Agrees. My old job did this. I didnt take it all that seriously and always gave myself 3 out of 5s.

Was no point imo for the same reasons you gave.

They tried to make us do this once. Most people threw the paper away. I'm in a union though so I don't have to suck dick through a bendy straw to keep my job

Yup.

Sometimes they don't even read them. Just sign them and file them.
