I basically rank games I've beaten only and there is a lot more on the list but it would go on forever. There is also a **** load I've played in the genre but didn't beat, mostly because I dropped it due to them being bad or boring games or having tedious gameplay.

I would also appreciate if there are no posts arguing about the genre of the games I've ranked. For example: RE5 is not a horror game it is a full-on hardcore action beat em' up 3rd person shooter etc etc etc. I classified it as horror so it will be horror to me.

That said you can recommend games that are not on the list but chances are I've already played them since I have played a lot of Horror games over the years, good or bad.

Well this is a quality list of essential horror games you need to play, but I will definitely pick Rule of Rose here. It has the most original, scary, depressing, and sick story that will keep you playing despite the clunky gameplay.

Quite a lot of votes for Clock Tower 3. I hope it isn't like Clock Tower 2 where it started strong but ended up being one of the worst games I've ever played. The story's premise was great but the exection was really bad. Add the just as bad if not worse gameplay and the game was really hard to enjoy.

On the other hand, I've always heard good things about Until Dawn but never really came along to play it. It looks like something I'll enjoy.

As for the rest, they all remain on my list to play in the future. Rule of Rose intrigues me a lot since I liked Haunting Ground.

Clock Tower 3 plays much more like a traditional survival horror game then the rest of the series, and it actually gets pretty weird at some points. Like it has an awesome anime magic girl transformation scene. It's one of the more quirkier entries in the genre and a really fun experience.

Until Dawn is definitely awesome, it's exactly like being in a horror movie and choices truly feel like they matter despite being binary. There's a lot of story to uncover and you definitely need multiple playthroughs to see the whole mystery.

Until Dawn sounds like exactly the kind of the game I need right now. Whenever I take a break from T*** SC, I'm just playing Tekken 7 or Splatoon 2 so I would love to play a Horror game instead.

As for the Clock Tower series. I found the SNES one to be near unplayable but enjoyed the one on the PS1 quite a lot. The point click adventure style interface on a PS1 was a bit awkward to get used to though.

Ironically though Clock Tower 2 looked like the game with the best potential in the series and even started off quite scary. But then the tedious gameplay and some of the ending requirements made the game very hard to play without scratching your head in frustration. That game was just weird in a bad way.

I guess I can check it out after I eventually play Clock Tower 3. It is nice to have options when I have finished playing most of the best ones in the genre.

Imagine an Innsmouth style setting with a cool chase scene away from fish people or some shit

and they could incorporate some sort of madness mechanic or something that could mess with you (make it so you have to really pay attention to make the optimal choices etc)

would be neat
