It's so hard to three star the grand prix. Either I just get hit with a blue shell 100 feet from the finish line or somebody hits me with something on the final lap and then five racers drive past me and hit me with their items before I can even get out of the way.

I three starred most of them on 50 and 100 on my first try and was winning races by 10+ seconds, but it's a huge jump in difficulty at 150.

Switch. I don't think I have the patience to do 200 (or mirror mode). I decided I was going to get all the three stars on 150cc and that was a bad idea, but I'm already in too deep. I only have four cups left, but I wouldn't be surprised if they take me as long as it takes to do all of the cups on 50.

I know he's joking, but he's not far off the truth with the smart steering. However, I'm trying to do it without because it's practically cheating. And it's annoying how it diverts you from shortcuts and how you can't get the third tier drift boost

It's too late now but whatever you get in 150cc transfers to 50cc and 100cc, so getting 3 stars in 150 Mushroom will automatically give you 3 stars in 50 Mushroom and 100 Mushroom. Mirror and 200cc don't do this, though.

If you do happen to do 200cc, remember to brake around turns. If you use auto accelerate, it might be a good idea to turn it off on certain tracks (most notably Rainbow Road). And don't trick off of ramps if a turn is coming up.

Yeah, I wish I had known that. I figured I'd start off on 50 and ease my way into it but it was way too easy, especially before I realized smart steering was on

I don't think it's that hard, to be honest. In many of my YouTube videos, I 3-star a 150cc Grand Prix my first try. Keep an item behind you at all times if possible, favoring defense over offense. And, of course, know the tracks well.

I found it easier than earlier Mario Karts, because you just have to get first on every track, rather than it having some weird algorithm that decides how many stars you get.

I know about holding an item behind, jeez. Sometimes you don't get one though and only the horn helps with a blue shell.

So... all you have to do is do the very best you possibly can do? To be fair, I'm not really sure what you're talking about with the other games though. 64 is the only other one I really played extensively and in that there aren't star values. There's just one level of gold, and you only have to have the most points, not necessarily winning every race.

In other games, even if you get 1st in every race, you might still get 2 stars.

For Mario Kart 7:
"To get this second star, you must stay in first for 50% or more of the last two laps of the race. The first lap does not count--only the last two."

As for the third star, no one really knows what it takes, as far as I've seen.

How do you deliberately stay in 2nd or 3rd? That sounds like it would be harder than just going as fast as you can and hoping you don't get screwed. And that strategy would only give you relief from blue shells, assuming they don't hit you along the way.

One thing I do like is that there seems to be very little rubber banding, so trying to open up a huge lead in first is a viable strategy compared to past games. And by past games I just mean MK64. I don't know at what point the series changed, but I remember in 64 you could see the AI players straight up teleport ahead on your minimap.

second and third you get better items than coins and bananas. also you can draft behind other cars to make you go faster. you can't do that in first place.

What good would drafting do if the intention is to stay in second? The mechanic is designed so that it's pretty much inevitable you pass whoever you're drafting. And I don't think drafting is something I'm really missing out on if I'm already in first place. Your advice might as well be "Win the race, but don't win the race too hard or you won't win the race."

^now you are getting it. If you are in first place, second place will red shell you to death and 7th place will blue shell you. 2nd place with draft ahead of you too if you are to close. so stay behind him, red shell and draft 1st place in the final turns and win the race. and when you see a blue shell you can laugh at first place for being stupid.

It's simple enough.

That sounds way more complicated than just trying to win the race outright. It doesn't matter anyway since I got all the stars I was going for and probably won't devote a serious amount of time to Mirror or 200 at this point
