Knowing nothing about boxing and not having watched the fight I feel like it might have made sense for McGregor to go hard right away because he was never going to have the stamina to win a long fight. It just shows that he never had a chance to begin with

^That. Plus anyone who's seen Mayweather fight knows the first rounds are the best rounds to try and do something effective. He is a smart boxer and doesn't do much the first few rounds in order to read a boxer. Once he starts fighting, it is pretty much over for the other fighter, he knows exactly what he needs to do in order to win.

Something that I don't think many people will mention (because it ended up not mattering) is how two of the three judge's scorecards had Mayweather winning rounds two and three even though he threw and landed less punches than McGregor. I don't know if it's boxing bias, or they just respected Mayweather's style more, or wanted to protect his record, or protect Vegas, or what. But I don't see any argument for McGregor not getting a clean sweep of those first 3 rounds.

It's not a huge deal since he lost anyway, but it makes me wonder what kind of controversy we would have had if McGregor didn't tired out kept up the pressure all fight.

Yeah the scorecard they had pop up during the fight had McGregor winning the first three rounds I believe and I'd agree with that. Definitely rounds two and three.

probably because the referee had to call out McGregor about twenty times in both those rounds

Does anybody else have a player you loathe on one of your favorite teams? But not somebody who sucks, somebody you hate because they're a shithead or annoying. I feel like the NFL is the most full of those guys. There are lots of goons in hockey but I don't pay enough attention to know who the big asshole on the Avs is. The NBA doesn't really have a lot of those guys. Neither does MLB but they have a few "unwritten rules" sticklers and there are always a few brawls every season. I kind of got jealous when I heard about that Yankees-Tigers one because I can't recall ever seeing the Rockies involved in a brawl.

For baseball I have to say Ryan Braun. Before the whole 2013 drug violation thing I felt he got injured often (sometimes I think he claims injury just to sit out a game or two) and we should trade him for a decent pitcher. Now he doesn't have much value and it seems like we are stuck with him.

He should have swallowed his pride and converted to first base three or four years ago before his offensive ability completely tanked. Even if he made the switch now he's probably done at this point

Have I become too cynical or is it annoying when an athlete pledges donations based on some arbitrary performance thing? It's one thing when it's like an organization and you sign up to for example donate per strikeout you record all season and it's kind of a fun thing for everyone but Matt Carpenter pledged 10k to Houston relief per home run he hits from here. This is nonsense, right? Why not just donate 70k and be done with it

Yeah, I get what you're saying. It's also stupid because that money is better spent on the relief effort now than in over a month when the season ends. When athletes do that kind of thing over the whole season with some predetermined organization, I can see the value because it's a fun way to raise awareness for the charity and give people reminders with each milestone they hit. But everyone knows about Harvey so this is just pointless

To be even more cynical, another thing I hate about charities is how we love perpetuating this myth that donating is pretty much the greatest thing you can do and all charities (that aren't for something deemed a "political" cause) are great. A lot of charities are actually really terrible, even the ones for a universally-agreed "good cause". But most people don't care or bother to properly vet these organizations, so it's a great way for athletes and celebrities to buy karma points with a public that is short on critical thinking skills.

Even when celebrities do pick good organizations it doesn't really even change my impression of them, because all rich people feel obligated to donate. In the case of athletes, I think a lot of them are basically mandated to do that, or at least perform community service. Obviously some are more genuine about it but I hate when stuff like "Broncos visit children's hospital" becomes a news story. Yeah, they and every other team visit it every fucking year. It's always a bunch of C- and D-tier players, too, like the stars must think they're too good for it or something

Like, most people are pretentious gits when they announce donating to something, and it rattles my acorns, but I'm glad they chose to spend some money on someone who might need it. My friend's younger sister always posts about giving her leftovers from a restaurant to homeless dudes, which is where I draw the line. That's super fucking lame.

Anyone still playing Sonic? It's really good! I've only got a few tiny critiques.

I've been playing BotW again lately and thinking about getting the DLC, but it seems kind of silly to spend $20 on that in comparison to Sonic. I mean, I'm pretty much just trying to find Korok seeds and farm for armor upgrades, but it's such a nice world to explore that I still enjoy such tedious tasks.

The Zelda DLC is decent and you might as well but it because you're gonna need that season pass when the real shit comes out later this year anyway. Since downloading the dlc I've put in another 10 hours or so. The heros path feature is fun because it shows you areas you haven't explored yet.

The Hero's Path thing does seem cool as hell, but that's the kind of thing that would've been a normal unlockable feature in yesteryear. At least Nintendo was one of the last major companies not to engage in shitty DLC practices, but sadly they seem to be going down that road now.

We hadn't gotten off sports in a couple days until Sonic came up again for whatever reason.

Anyway the Cardinals, an organization that for all I know could have a billion dollar valuation, have pledged to match Matt Carpenter's donations! They probably won't need to spend even $50k!

And in other extremely weird and bad news on the same subject, did you guys see that the Rangers forced the Astros to give up a home series? Rangers@Astros is starting up and obviously they can't play in Houston so the Astros asked if they could play a home series in Arlington and then the Rangers could play a home series in Houston later and they said no. Now they're playing in Tampa Bay and all proceeds are going to the relief effort which is nice but damn how unneighborly can you be Rangers

Do Game Overs make you restart the whole game? That's how it worked in the old games. I never got close to a Game Over in Mania, but I'd be pissed if it made me start all over. Sonic 2 and its zero-ring final boss gave me dozens of game overs as a wee lad, which was the epitome of frustration.

I have two big gripes with Mania: they kept the 10 minute limit from the old games, while the levels are much bigger than the Genesis ones, which is stupid. If you want to explore at all, you are guaranteed a Time Over death in a few levels. Also, you turn into Super form when you double-tap Jump, so once you get all the emeralds, you can't fly or glide or climb or use shield abilities without transforming first, which is dumb. They are gonna patch that soon, though.

Anyway, STL, you're very close to the end!

Onto a game more of you guys might care about, have any of you played the Uncharted DLC but not DLC game that just came out? I loved UC4, but the $40 price point is scary in terms of game length.

I meant they make you go back to the first act of the current stage, but that's still pretty stupid. I think that's actually how the old games worked, but you had to use a continue and if you ran out of continues, then you'd start the whole game over. With Mania they should have just made it so a game over takes you to the beginning of the current act. I've seen some complaints that still using lives at all is dumb, but I think that's too far.

That Sonic 2 final level is bullshit. I'd play through that game so many times and fail to beat it every time, even when I was pretty old. When I finally did beat it, I just used a bunch of save states because I don't have the patience for that. Not only is no rings ridiculous, but the "safe" hitboxes on both bosses are very unclear (a problem that plagues a lot of the boss fights in the Genesis games).

They just shouldn't have a time counter at all. It was useful in the first two games when levels were short enough that you can actually get a significant time bonus (and I think if you got enough end-of-level points, you'd get a continue). It's been pointless since 3 when the levels were too long to get much of a bonus and saving rendered continues useless. Actually, I seem to remember 3 having continues, but I don't know how they work (maybe to stay on the same act?).

I'm confused by this Mike Leake to the Mariners deal. Although it seems he hasn't been as good this year as I thought, is this the Cardinals basically giving up on the season? Did he clear waivers before they went on their big win streak or something? And what does this mean for Stanton; could a team still acquire him, or could the Marlins take back the waivers now that they've closed the WC gap a bit? Not that I think anybody is gonna try to get him at this point if they didn't do it already

A Stanton trade would likely be in the off season. As for Leake getting dealt, your guess is as good as mine when it comes to the Cardinals' goals. They should have traded him a month ago when his numbers still looked decent. I don't care about losing him but between this and Lynn walking and a host of other things their current motives are an enigma to me.
