I'd rather see the new one than check out the old one. I read the wiki but I still got some questions though:

1. Why is Pennywise screwing with the kids in the first place? Is he just a jerk for the heck of it?

2. What IS he exactly?

3. Is he killing kids or eating em or what?

4. Why'd the little kid keep saying we all float down here in the new trailer?

1. Fear makes them more tasty

2. His true form is never known, he is killed in spider form though There is a bit more to his origin, it relates to one of his powers "Dead-light" or something

3. Yep food. Though he doesn't need to eat, he's just an asshole

4. The illusion is comparing balloons to the corpses of his half-eaten victims floating in the sewers

He's "supernatural evil". That's really all you'll ever know, and you kind of have to roll with it or else the story is going to be really unsatisfying.

He's a very Stephen King-y sort of character.

Also, IT was one of those stories that got tied into all of the Dark Tower stuff later on, so reading those (or at least a wiki article about the overall mythos) might give you a different perspective on him, but it might just confuse you even more. Though it was written before the tie-ins started, so it definitely stands on its own if you're not into the rest of the craziness.

IT is basically over an overall representation of fear, or a persons fear, and it takes the form of whatever you're afraid of. A giant spider is just one of those forms, as well as pennywise the clown, which it finds easier to lure children.

Yup but all of the characters' fears are vanilla as fuck, so Pennywise never turns into a dementor.

To be fair, they were young kids in the 50s, so they didn't have years worth of elaborate horror movies, video games, or a lot of reading to really crank up their imaginations, terror-wise.

Realistically, King probably based most of their fears on stuff he was afraid of when he was a kid, because It (and Stand by Me) are pretty clearly based on a lot of his own personal experiences as a kid growing up in Maine in the 50s.

hes a god/demon that takes the form of whatever you fear in order to scare you which makes you taste better.

"Pennywise" is just her favorite form when luring children, who's fears are much easier to materialize. But its power is also a double edged sword because it must obey the "rules" of its form. (such as, weakness to silver if a werewolf). Its power is based in belief and can be used against it easily.

the boggart was actually based on pennywise.

Also the spider isn't one of its forms. Its akin to its "avatar" that it sends to earth. The only reason they see it as a spider is because its the closest thing to its real form that their minds can perceive.

Pennywise isn't a person.

And it does need to eat. It just scares them because it makes them taste better. Her motivation is to eat.

I meant more the relationships between the kids and how they interact with the world in general, but let's be honest. Considering what Stephen King turned out to be as an adult, who the hell knows what sort of supernatural horrors he may have stumbled across as a kid?

When Pennywise lures that child (a main character's younger brother) to his death, he does so by talking about balloons, etc, floating in the sewers. So when Pennywise uses that image, he repeats the floating comment from earlier. It's also one of the more memorable quotes from the original so it makes sense to include it in the new version, even if it completely misses the mark.

i meant the harry potter version.

I would assume the Harry Potter version is based on the actual folklore version (ie, the one he was linking to there). Though I don't give a single shit about Harry Potter, so I have no idea if the comparison to Pennywise is really blatant, or if J. K. Rowling openly came out at one point and said "Yep, it's absolutely a reference to It." (which might explain why Stephen King flipped his shit over Harry Potter and over-referenced it in Wolves of the Calla, in spite of how absolutely terrible that was).

Personally, when I think Boggarts, I just think the race of faeries from Changeling: the Dreaming, which came out a couple years before Harry Potter. Not that I think she stole the idea from there (though she did apparently steal a lot of ideas from other book series while writing Harry Potter, so, it's always possible).

I'm honestly kinda surprised no one has a problem with a movie (and tv special, and book) about murdering children.

Like, not that I'm comparing a fictional work to child porn, but sexualizing kids on tv is wrong while ripping their arms off and eating them is fine?

Not tryna start a whole big debate here. Just saying, in theory neither seems like something we should be glorifying.

Only if you don't remember how shit-scary being a kid could actually be.

Adult me never goes to sleep with my head under a sheet in desperate terror that something was going to slither out from under my bed or burst out of my closet and murder me in my sleep. And I'm actually capable of going outside after sunset without assuming that there are a thousand things lurking in the shadows just out of eyesight range.

I've never known a single person who played Changeling "silly". If anything, the usual tone is more like It or Stranger Things.

Doesnt King include some kind of sex-related scenes in most of his books?
Everything from "small stuff" like masturbating in school while thinking about your girlfriend in stockings, getting a handjob when you couldnt save an animal, getting a massive boner while seeing a friends girlfriend upskirt, etc to more darker stuff like inserting a loaded gun into a mans ass just to watch him masturbate, raping a girl to near death with an electrified condom, pretending to be a library police just to rape a kid in four detailed pages, etc.
