Basically Nintendo is telling people they should download a rom instead by doing this otherwise you're a sucker for buying their 25 year old game that has "on disk" DLC that you have to go to the store to buy added to it.

I already have 2 of those amiibos and had them long before this game was even announced, so no big deal.

The other 2 I want to get because they will look cool on my shelf.

So, looks like I am getting some free DLC with my game and amiibos. Awesome!!!

The only thing that seems like a big loss is the hard mode. And if the hard mode is just the same game with more and/or deadlier enemies, I'd probably ignore it anyway, assuming the normal mode is decently challenging. But if the hard mode has unique bosses and/or a slightly different story (if the hard mode has Samus wearing her fusion suit, does that mean she's returning to SR388 some time after Metroid: Fusion?), that would be bad to require an Amiibo to unlock. What if you can't find the Amiibo in your area? If you could download the hard mode from the E-Shop, at least then you'd be almost guaranteed to be able to get it.

One of the many reasons I don't fuck with Nintendo anymore. They're doing stupid shit like this. The entire amiibo concept is dumb to begin with.

Remember when you had to buy a whole handheld and link cable to get NES Metroid with Metroid Prime? And you had to buy a whole game with the previous accessories just to get a costume in Metroid Prime?

That shit was awesome. Physical unlocks are awesome and people can suck it.

The gallery stuff I can pass off as being 'extras' you get for having the amiibos (since a lot of their newer games has little extras).
But if the hard mode can only be unlocked via amiibo that's where, in my opinion, it's no longer just 'little extras' but actual game content.

There's also the very plausible scenario of what if someone wants to get the hard mode, wants to get the amiibo... But can't due to scarcity or other reasons? Now they can't play the game in its fullest even if they pay extra.

It doesn't piss me off, but it's not something I'm pleased with.

Hopefully it ends up being 'you can unlock it instantly with amiibo but can be unlocked via another method'. But that probably isn't the case.

this would have been completely fine except for the hard mode bit. i like amiibos and am happy that they're actually getting real support instead of just pointless bonus bots in smash, but that was a shitty move on nintendo's part.
