What a bunch of unimaginative, boring people we have here. They would rather name their child some bland generic name like John, Jane, Michael, etc, over something unique and cool. If I have a son, his name will be Dante. If I have a daughter, her name will be Satyrn.

Nah children are to show our deep love for a certain character from a game. I mean that is why so many boys are named Link.

Just because they're not being named Zelda, Aeris, Kratos or whatever doesn't mean they will have a dull name by default.
FYI, Dante will either grow up or presumed to be a pretentious douche and Satyrn will forever be getting her name spelt wrong or asked to spell it out, learn to hate it and probably change it.

You're basing what you presume they will think is cool on what you like but I'll tell you what-if you're willing to let us choose your new name for you by poll and legally change it, then you'll have a leg to stand on.

My wife and I have actually considered some names, but as middle names, since we first started talking on OkCupid because we both liked Mass Effect and Dragon Age. We thought about combining our first names Mike and Roxlyn for Mikaelyn (spelling is still up for debate) and tossing in Liara as the middle name. Boys names, we're still on the fence with, but seeing as how I'm a huge western fan, she wasn't totally against Wyatt as a boys name.

A name is more than what a person is called. It should stand for something or is derived from a quality that the parents desires their child to have.

Many names have been passed down with this in mind. Parents select a name that denotes strength, fortitude, dignity and/or other virtues.

A child's name is the first gift that a parent can bestow upon them as they enter the world. Thus, it should be a name that keeps the child's best interest in mind.

Strange/unique names or names based on the parent's sense of humor or sentimentality can have adverse effects on a child's development socially (bullying/ negative stigma etc etc)....

At often times, parents who name their child strange names often do it because of their own strange reasons. But they are mostly never about the child itself. So.... ://

We should have the child's future in mind and choose wisely.

This.

Also, if you name your child based on your interests, there's no guarantee your child will grow up to share those interests. So then, in 20 years or whatever, your kid is running around with the name Sephiroth, hates video games, and has to deal with every asshole he meets asking "Like the Final Fantasy character?" every time he introduces himself.

You could probably get away with it with a name like Ness or Dante... something somewhat "normal". But there are scores of character names which would be just awful to saddle on a child for their entire life.

1. Names are irrelevant when it comes to getting a job. It's all about who you know and if you have the right degree (the degree itself doesn't matter, but if you have a Master's you are over qualified).

2. If a person is going to get bullied, they will get bullied regardless of what their name is. This is why you need to teach kids how to cope with bullying rather than running away from it.

This sort of thing is inevitable, though. You can't know what kind of name your child would like. You have to choose for them. No matter what name you give them, you won't know until they're older whether they like the name or not. It's not about video games; no matter what criteria you use to decide on your child's name, they may hate it.

As a parent, your primary goal should be to provide for and nurture your child, not to massage your own ego with names you think are cool. It's a child, not a pet.

I'd much rather be a boring, unimaginative father who's a great and caring provider than someone who cares more that people recognize them as a gamer through the names they picked for their kid.

People don't have a choice in being born, but that doesn't make them possessions. You have to make a lot of decisions for them, particularly when they're younger, and you should be trying to make good decisions. Serving your own interests with quirky names is not a great starting point.

One of my friends I met like a few months ago has a daughter that was born in 2005 named Zelda. If you talk to her, she will tell you how much she hates video games, and that she hates it when people relate her immediately to the character instead of who she is. We all actually laugh about her father at work, but friendly laughter. Not bullying.
