So normally, they call you, let it ring once or twice, then hang up and expect you to call back.
This time, my phone literally lit up and said I had a missed call, despite it being face-up on my desk all morning. Normally it vibrates and is illuminated for a few seconds while the call is incoming. But this time it just was like BOOM missed call. Couldn't have answered it even if I wanted to. --- Not changing this sig until Pat Benatar is in Super Smash Bros. Why do they do that anyway? I had one company doing that on my cell phone, so I added them to contacts and blocked them (as it would say I had a message from them otherwise).
It's annoying, but was easy to stop, still not sure what they get out of having you call them back. --- Proud member of the Arv The Great is great fan club!!! Join today by putting it in your sig. ... Copied to Clipboard!

I think the point is that they know most people don't answer calls from unknown numbers halfway across the country, so they try to get you to call them back (even though they never leave messages, thus defeating the purpose) and get you onto the spam line. --- Not changing this sig until Pat Benatar is in Super Smash Bros. I think it is a new thing where they call your phone, but force the call to go straight to voice mail. Some government fellow in NY wants to make that illegal. I never use voice mail, even on my cell, so they are going to have problems having that work on me.

So normally, they call you, let it ring once or twice, then hang up and expect you to call back. Uh, not 100% sure that's the actual scam. Sometimes it's more a matter that they're calling multiple people at once and once one person picks up the other lines stop. And, in general, who the fuck sees a missed call and decides, "Oh, gee, I'm going to call them back to see what they wanted!" If that's their scam, the only people they'd get are guys even stupider than them and those are pretty rare. Playsaver posted... Basically it involves layering two phone calls at once so the line can show up as busy (despite the recipient not picking up) and get your voice mail. Well, considering I block all calls that aren't in my contacts list that scam isn't going to work on me, even if I did call back numbers that don't leave me a voice mail.

I'm pretty sure those short ones are just automated calls searching for active phone numbers that they would then sell to scammers or use later to try and scam.

lately the scams here have been strange.
they're all the same. you answer, they say they're so and so working with such and such, then very explicitly ask if you can hear them. at that point, i just hang up. the other one is, again, so and so working for such and such, but midway through the call hangs up. i assume in an attempt to call back since it sounds more legit than normal. the thing is, the numbers they use are spoofed VOIP numbers. like fucking 000-003-0020 what number is like that. --- killin' darth vader with my mother****in' kick drum ... Yeah, that seems unlikely. They don't know what your voice sounds like. If all they needed was a recording of someone saying yes to steal their money, it'd be a lot easier for them just to say yes themselves, rather than use a recording of you saying that one word.
