That may be an exaggeration, but the reality is that the United States is exceptionally overweight. And, according to a new study, that may affect perceptions of who is and is not American. The authors of the study — published last week in Psychological Science, the journal of the Association for Psychological Science — found that heavier Asian-Americans are more likely to be perceived as “American” than those of a normal weight. The researchers also found that overweight Asian-American men were less likely than those of a normal weight to be viewed as being in the country illegally. “We found that there was a paradoxical social benefit for Asian-Americans, where extra weight allows them to be seen as more American and less likely to face prejudice directed at those assumed to be foreign,” said Sapna Cheryan, an author of the study and an associate professor of psychology at the University of Washington, where the research was conducted. But it isn’t simply that heavier people are seen as more American: The authors did not find the same effect for whites, blacks or Latinos. Most people pretty much eat ramen during their college days and then stop altogether. Not really too different from here I guess. Asian cuisine in general are also not that hard on sodium either. Latin America is getting fat so Latinos don't any benefit from being fat. And I don't mean they were dumb for any prejudice or whatever, there were just a lot of dumb people. I think there were two other Asian guys in my class of 400. In hs it was mostly just Mexican people calling me chino. And they rarely mean it as an insult, but there are always outliers. LittleRoyal posted... And I'm mostly Vietnamese I don't even think I look that Chinese Eh, people that aren't familiar with Asians can't really tell the differences (usually). People can usually spot that I'm half Korean nowadays. There's a ton of Asian cliques around my university, so I think it becomes easier for people to tell different countries apart after a while. Unfortunately I'm not a part of any of those - never really felt comfortable as my mom never taught me the language. I get the feeling of feeling less "American" despite the fact that I really only know English, spent most of my childhood in the south, and have trouble relating to people with strong roots in their Asian heritage.
