I bought the DS version. It's arriving on Monday.

I know very little about it. I know there's Crono, Frog, Magus, Robo, and time travel. Nothing specific.

I hope it lives up to expectations!

FF7 would be my bet for the most common "first RPG" of us, and I'd imagine many of them played at least one other FF game before playing CT. It was probably my third or fourth when I played most of it in 2003, and I played a few more RPGs by the time I beat it on the DS around 2012.

For people whose first RPG was on the SNES, I bet there's a good chance SMRPG was their first too.

(Makes me wonder how many people's first RPG was made by some company other than Square, yeesh)

My first rpg was Final Fantasy 1 and I played it on the NES.

Chrono Trigger was so many years later and is still amazing. It WILL live up to all the hype but you'll still be hungry.

This is simply not true. FF7 or SMRPG holds that honor.

FF4 and FF6 probably both over it as well. And that's even with excluding the PAL markets that didn't get a version until the DS. If you include them Mystic Quest probably even has it beat.

I doubt I would consider it one of the best of all time if I played it for the first time today.

However I finished Chrono Cross about 4 or 5 times before I tried Chrono Trigger. I used to really love Chrono Cross, but now I can't see it as anything else than a not worthy sequel.

you're looking at it with a 90s perspective. I'd be a little surprised if someone under the age of 21 had the same experience.

Yeah, I was running with the B8 perspective because I didn't think Nanis actually believed CT was the first RPG for people in general. I could probably broaden this to GameFAQs in general, but not like the world or anything.

Prepare for one of the best experiences in your life. Nothing else that could ever happen to you will compare. You might as well lie down and die after the end credits because there will be no point in doing anything else.

But I don't want to overhype it.

It's a fine game -- I don't have many flaws with it. #1 RPG? Nah, there's several I prefer and this isn't really my genre of choice anyway...but it's put together well and you may be humming its music by the time you're done.

I'm expecting old school FF. But... I guess better, with time travel.

I really don't have a lot of experience with old (or new) JRPG's like the rest of B8. I've only played FF1 (and beat it!).

Growing up my favorite RPG's were Golden Sun, The Lost Age, and Lunar Legend. I also liked Dragon Warrior. I feel like I've played more but it's been a while.

I played it for 20 mins. Feels like the Golden Sun intro. Woke up to a festival happening! Game seems pretty standard. I'm Crono, I named Lucca, and then went to the festival.

I bet on the GI Jogger and he won! Exciting. I spoke to everyone, learned some lore, and then bumped into a girl who dropped her pendant. Marle, right? She really likes that pendant.

And now I've time traveled in order to find her. That was a bizarre turn.

I didn't encounter a lunch, I think!

I had accrued about 22 silver points, spent 10 trying to guess the right soldier in the tent on the right. Got it wrong. Didn't realize I was actually trying to guess who was who.

I have a bad habit of playing my 3DS late at night in bed, right before I fall asleep. I'll have to change that.

Playing more. Actually focusing a bit this time and not playing at midnight.

So I've gone back 400 years to around 600 AD. After Death? Same town. Guardia? The war with the Fiendlord (love this name) is waging. Queen Leene (does that rhyme?) went missing but then returned. A Bell is being built in her honor. Crono brings up the Millenial Fair but that's crazy talk.

I like how how this one guy in town is chugging a pint and you can't interact with him until he finishes. Also how Crono shakes his head to indicate 'no' all the time.

I'm getting strong Golden Sun vibes which I love. I suspect GS was inspired by this game given it started to get produced a few years after CT came out.
