Five teens who call themselves “The Restorers” are taking a stand to end female genital mutilation (FGM) with their innovative cell phone app.

The app, known as i-Cut, is a program that allows girls to call for help, seek assistance, and report abuse to reputable law enforcement organizations. When utilized by a user, the app connects her with the legal, medical, and therapeutic counseling and resources required—all at the touch of a button.


For their ingenuity, the Restorers were invited and became the only African participants to attend the Technovation Challenge in Silicon Valley, California – a competition for women who are using technology to address problems in their community.

If i-Cut wins the challenge, Technovation—which is sponsored by Google and the UN—will award the team $15,000.

The girls’ own community has denounced the practice of FGM, but since the tradition is deeply embedded in the social structure of many African villages, some Kenyan women are still subjected to the “rite of passage”.

“FGM is a big problem affecting girls worldwide and it is a problem we want to solve,” team member Stacy Owino told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. “This whole experience will change our lives. Whether we win or not, our perspective of the world and the possibilities it has will change for the better.”

Choosing to get your kid vaccinated and wear clothes in the cold isn't a privilege, it's a responsibility.

That is not as big a deal as a woman having her clitoris removed. If male circumcision involved cutting out the glans on the tip of the penis, or cutting the knob right off, you'd be getting somewhere - getting rid of a single flap of skin on top is not equivalent to how much of a girl's vagina can get cut out of her during a "female circumcision".

The foreskin is a lot more than a flap of skin. It contains the frenulum and a lot of nerve endings. It protects the glans and keeps it soft. It is in fact mutilation in the same way female circumcision is. This is a huge sexist misandrist double standard.

but that's simply not true for non-consenting children.

Permanent cosmetic surgery on babies and children because of religious reasons or just because you think it makes your kid look better is wrong and evil.

For adults doing it to themselves? Sure. But leave the genitals of children alone.

Well CE is mostly an American website full of American males.

Female Genital Mulitation to them is less familar than Hogwarts witchcraft and Wizardry.

Meanwhile they do comprehend and have experience with either male genital multiation or it's religious defenders.

I understand your point, but personally I'd be interested in hearing about whatever's going on in Italian politics as a breath of fresh air. I see enough Trump/Putin stuff online, to the point that I know more about American politics than I do about my local Australian politics, and even then there's a lot of bullshit happening over here that's frustrating to hear about. But this thing is happening in Italian politics? That's interesting. And to talk about Italian politics, you might have to talk about the culture of modern-day Italy and how it reacts to the politics of today. There's a wealth of interesting new info there that sounds interesting. That's just me, though.

I don't think the outcome of this topic was because people were unfamiliar with the topic, and so substituted the closest cultural practice in order to talk about it. The topic ended up like this because someone went "lol anteater" as a joke, and anti-circumcision people hit the thread to talk about the injustice of male genital mutilation and how insensitive and ignorant it was to dismiss the foreskin. They completely bypassed the subject of the thread to yell down at each other about their ongoing political squabble, because the title has "circumcision" in it. They don't care about female circumcision, because they want to argue about circumcision as a whole, and how dare boys get snipped without their permission as a baby! Completely ignoring that female circumcision involves the clitoris being removed, the labia being cut off and the vagina being sewn shut, with a woman's legs being bound together for weeks to facilitate healing. They don't recognise that, because they're blinded by the word "circumcision" and instantly think about the human rights violation that is a baby boy getting a bit of skin snipped of, rather than the human rights violation that is having one's pleasure receivers removed, as well as outwardly showing genitalia (most likely decried for being "obscene"), before having their crotch sewn together to preserve them for marriage.

Ignorance regarding female genital mutilation isn't an excuse to snipe back and forth about dicks and how unethical and horrible it is that penises are altered at birth. It's an opportunity to learn about a serious, disgusting cultural problem that causes much more unnecessary pain, as well as birth/conception issues for the recipient, on a much wider scale - all in the name of decency and purity for one's husband. But people used the thread to cry "what about me" and champion a cause that's barely in the same league. Circumcision is wrong, and mutilation? Sure. Taking out a healthy appendix is mutilation, especially if the recipient didn't ask for it - and the appendix is borderline useless. But female circumcision is in a league of its own. It's objectively worse than male circumcision. It's barbaric, and it leads to a lifetime of infection, birthing troubles and chronic pain in a way that male circumcision does not. And hijacking a thread about it to talk about anteater dicks and poor mutilated chrome-dome dongs is fucking disgraceful.
