Pope Francis has said that what he calls gender theory – “that everyone can choose their own sex” – is “the exact opposite” of God’s creation.

In a meeting with Polish bishops during World Youth Day, whose transcript was released yesterday by the Vatican, the Pope said there were powerful institutions which funded the spread of “gender theory” in schools.

The Pope also said he had discussed the subject with Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, who told his successor: “Your Holiness, we are living in an age of sin against God the Creator.”

transgender people don't 'choose' their gender, they have a legit condition where they body/mind doesn't match. obv some people take advantage of this to get attention but the people that actually take hormones and the like.

i do think it is wrong to let young children transition

Francis is very liberal considering he is the Pope.

That's a very important qualification.

His stance of "If gay people never have sex and dedicate their life to my church, they might not automatically go to hell" was controversial for being too leftist.

That's the level of "very liberal."

A more correct assment would be he's not as far right as the previous Popes.

Yeah but this works both ways. Don't try and force your kids into thinking they're only 2 genders and they're both immutable.

Kids are smarter than people give them credit for. If you have a series of conversations with them about gender identity, they can make their own decisions.

What I want to know is why a social construction like gender is dictated by sex. In other words, if gender is socially constructed and someone who was born with a vagina wants to identify as a man, why does that involve hormone treatment and surgeries to look like a physical male?

People try to make a meaningful distinction between the words gender and sex but I'm not convinced that the distinction is valid.

Because the distinction between sex and gender doesn't seem to be meaningful, and there are many people who are trying to use transgenderism as some tool for censoring and controlling how people think and speak. Jordan Peterson has some great material on this topic.

Almost all transgender people don't bother with that. Although that's largely to do with cost and health-risks.

For example in the UK they have they have less than 200 surgeries a year. In 2009 it was less than 150 and in 2000 it was less than 50.

But the estimated Trans population is 600,000 there. With more trans people coming out every month.

Not sure about US statistics but I assume it's a similar story.

The idea that trans people all want expensive and invasive surgery is a myth. And the saddest part even a lot of the minority of people who do want it largely can't afford it.

I think that basically, gender identity is what we internalize from an early age, the perceptions and behaviors that we might give and receive due to our sex, in relation to the kinda society we might live in.

like, a person who identifies as a male might have certain expectations, and vice-versa for someone that identifies as a female.

and if your sex matches your perceived gender, that's one thing, but if it doesn't, that's where the conflict comes from

That would be nice, but you can't live in a fairy tail world where no one raises an eyebrow at someone who looks the opposite of what they are. Children don't even do mean things directly because of their parents, but because it's in human nature to be curious and cautious of unnatural things

but if gender is a social construct, what's to keep someone from just redefining it or just acting how they want to act? why is so much importance placed on the physical transition that pretty much always changes someone into the opposite sex?

this is why i say that there's no meaningful distinction between gender and sex. some people want there to be one because their intent is to control how people think and speak, to exert power over others. imo at least.
