like i don't always feel that i represent the typical "macho male" by any means

but i don't let that bother me. it's just one aspect of what society considers a man. why would i go and transition into a female because of that? why would i let a social construct bother me that much or dictate what my appearance should be?

He's the Pope tho so his opinions actually do have a lot of weight. He's done a lot so far to modernize the Papacy, but you can't expect him to go all the way.

But why is swinging far left on social matters the same as "modernizing" the papacy? That's just tooting your own horn and pretending you're right on everything. Maybe modernizing the papacy also includes not accepting whatever the left says all the time.

Because identifying as a male is more complex than just matching male stereotypes. Same goes with identifying as a female.

How many would get it if they could afford it?

No idea but I assume it would be a lot higher.

Even then a lot still wouldn;t just because the surgies are so invasive.

It seems to be the case that more often than not, people who are transgender want to transition.

I think you're demonstrating a self-fulfilling prophecy.

From my anecdotal experience of the limited amount of transgenders I know. They dont go around talking about their gentials and what surgeries they are having.

And that transition often involves the physical makeup of the other sex. So gender is clearly not separate from sex, or perhaps we should start calling it trans-sexual instead of trans-gender.

"Some people who are different genders also want to be different sexes, therefore they are the same thing." is poor logic.

According to the 2011 National Transgender Discrimination Survey, 61 percent of trans people have medically transitioned using things like hormones. 33 percent have surgically transitioned.

I imagine if the costs were less prohibitive, the numbers would be higher. In any case, the data supports my conclusion - most trans people don't leave it at just matters of gender, but also include sex in the equation. So I'm not convinced that gender and sex are distinct concepts in any meaningful sense. It seems like it's a new thing for the left to try to redefine gender so that it's something else separate from sex.

Maybe trans-gender people ought to use the label trans-sexual people instead.

I mean, yea, gender is related to sex, as people would most often want their sex to match their gender identity, but it doesn't mean that there's no social aspect to it. in different societies, there are different dynamics to how males and females are related to, and some people want/need/desire what's opposite of their sex.

but what we're using as transgender in this topic is interchangable with transsexual

I'm down for considering this child abuse so long as we also make teaching kids about religion child abuse since your main concern here seems to be about impressionable kids.

To be fair, not all opinions are created equal. People who identify as religious have great opinions all the time when they choose to exercise logical thought and not fall back on lazy religious beliefs. The world would be doomed if the majority of the world constantly applied illogical religious arguments to everything they did.

Think of it this way, transgender folks are more likely to be suicidal, it's just a fact. So force feeding those ideas in to the susceptible minds of children is basically hurting a good number of them down the line.

IIRC in the rare event that a woman took over the position of Pharaoh in ancient Egypt, they were always addressed by Male pronouns.

Acceptance.

As long as humans exist, so will prejudice.

I have you tagged as an anti-Semite.

I don't care.

So your dumb "as long as humans exist, so will prejudice" is just an excuse you use to maintain your own prejudices. Sorry, people can and do rise above prejudices. Your lack of doing so isn't you being normal, it's you escaping responsibility for your moral failing.

You may now close your account.

I used to feel the same way you do, that it was wrong for people to think certain things, that it was my duty to help guide people to rise above their ignorance and intolerance. That I didn't have the time of day for people that couldn't put things like gender and race past them. But I found out people aren't necessarily that simple, and when we try to forget our past evils we often repeat them.

It's not my place to try to make people understand. I don't care what they do, so long as they're not hurting others without sufficient reason or forcing people to do what they want, or don't want, to do. Yes, it's great when people can put aside differences and work together. But I acknowledge that people are multidimensional, we're not entirely composed of good and happy things. We all have things like anger, and hate, and that's not something we should be ashamed of. We will feel anger and hate, it's a part of what makes us human. And I'm not going to go on some crusade to force people to be tolerant. It's not my ethical duty to get people to stop being intolerant, it's my ethical duty to ensure people are allowed to be intolerant within reason. Dissent is critical to a democracy. Without it, we're not one.

So there you go. I didn't have to prove anything about myself to you, but there it is. I don't care if you call me something, because it's your right to do so. Just don't tell me how to feel and think, because I'm not going to tell you.

The Pope is just confused.

Kids shouldn't be taught that they can just choose a gender. Just like they shouldn't be taught that homosexuals just choose to be gay. Luckily, this isn't what's happening (in legitimate classrooms anyways).

Kids should be, and hopefully are being, taught that their physical sex might not match up with their mental state, and that it's something that they should not be ashamed of or forced to endure hardships over.

Much better than telling them that they're abominations and the like IMO.
