So I had one of those ice cream scooping spoons that had a rubber handle. It didn't even occur to me that there would be a problem if I threw this thing in the dishwasher.

An hour later, there was a really strong burning smell coming from the kitchen. I opened the refrigerator--no, that wasn't it. I noticed that the smell was emanating from the dishwasher. I opened it up, and oh god, the smell.

Apparently, the ice cream scooper had fallen out and made contact with very hot metal the whole time. The rubber handle had melted, and now the entire house is filled with this horrendous burning rubber smell. I never imagined that such a thing would happen.

My question is: was this a dumb thing for an adult to do? Is it common knowledge that you don't put ice cream scoopers in the dishwasher? I'm just glad there's no pregnant woman in the house, because those chemicals would probably have caused her to have a miscarriage by now.

No, it's not very common for something to fall right on the element of the dishwasher while it's running without water pressure or the rotation sending it all the way to the floor. Never happened to me or anybody I know, that's just bad luck.
