Berkeley students weren't happy about our student center and several local businesses having their windows smashed. There were separate groups of Berkeley students peacefully protesting Milo, which is totally fine.

if you mean the speech and not violent acts? protect all of it, 100%.

once it's seen out there it can be judged for everything that it is. you don't need a strawman, you can use an actual example. you don't need a hypothetical, you can use a real one, with real people. you can judge individual people based on the events which unfold and see where you agree or disagree with them. you can see where your principles lie and argue for or against different things that occur, hopefully maintaining a consistent position with previous ones, or adjusting your viewpoint when it doesn't. not seeing it doesn't mean it goes away, it just hides. people who may generally align themselves with those groups may see that there's a fringe they do need to purge and condemn. they can then evaluate how to better frame their positions so they aren't mistaken to be a part of that group.

all of that is absolutely important and should be protected.

they were violent and abusive verbally and physically toward the people protesting against them.

best case scenario for these people is "i see nazis and confederate apologists as allies or neutral parties that are not worth my scorn", and that is still a very very bad look. I would not march with a nazi under any circumstance.
