Use simple ads not riddled with infections, or auto play music or videos. Is it really that hard?

yes, text based advertisements which don't take up 90% of the screen, use fuck all bandwidth, and don't have anything moving or which have sound

Again, improved ads is the same business model. No ads isn't a better business model, it's no business model. My question is, how do you suggest all these content publishers make money if ads should go away? I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just curious to hear how you think.

Advertise, but allow people to skip the ad at all times. Advertising shouldn't "trap" you. That's just annoying and honestly makes me not want to buy your product. It has the opposite effect.

Hey, I actually agree. For a site whose value resides in a lot of user-generated content and unpaid work put in by mods, it's pretty cheap that no ad revenue goes back into that.

This is silly. None of the hassle of sites closing down from no money/no incentive would be comparable to the now comparably dwarfed hassle of ads. And what's more, you and I both know exactly the kind of sites with those kind of ads, and it would be absurd to complain about it on an illegitimate site. There's nothing further to discuss here.

Why not have a donation tab that shows how much money is needed to maintain a site for the month? Cap the visible value so people won't realize how much extra, if any, money is being made from donations to pay workers extra. Still ads on the bottom of the pages, all ads reviewed ahead of time.

Just an idea, not sure how it would work.

that would require the site to put in effort towards providing its users a better experience and service in order to justify a donation, something Error and GameFAQs are incapable of doing

This is an unrealistic point of view. I agree that ads are out of control and would say that perhaps some regulation needs to happen on the medium, but it's a viable revenue stream for services that you otherwise don't want to pay for.

Besides, it's not just a plaintext website, it's a site that hosts thousands of documents, images (and videos?) with a search engine on top, and a message board as well. Now the message board has around 1.5k content users at a given time, let's play with the thought that the rest of the site has 10x that. You'll want 24 hour uptime, database maintenance, etc. The sort of analytics that SBAllen has at his disposal suggests a significant, additional cost to that. So with you actually being an IT professional, ostensibly, how is it that you're so oblivious to the costs of running this site? I mean, it's a big enough site that advertisers are interested in it, that should be your first clue that it's not just some plaintext site that anyone can afford to host with no hassle.
