But Genesis Sonic was nothing more than crappy mechanics and asinine level design disguised under design and marketing as a good series of games. 2D sonic was never good to begin with. It wasn't the best game on its own, but Knuckles complemented it really well. Also, fuck Sonic 2's special stages. I think it's more because Marble and Carnival are one right after another and take up the middle chunk of the game. I consider both of those some of the worst in the trilogy. But yeah those first two zones are great stuff. Ice Cap is too. I don't really like any of the Special Stages that much tbh but I overall like Sonic 2's the most. I don't like Blue Spheres at all. In Sonic 2, if you're playing with Tails, his AI is just stupid in the Special Stages. You just have to assume he'll run into mines. In a single-player game, I want to play with just Sonic so Tails doesn't fuck everything up for me. But that sucks, because I like having Tails around otherwise. With Sonic 3's spheres, I don't have to worry about that. I still need good reflexes to pass the stages, but I can play with Tails and not have to worry about janky AI. Yeah that's a major flaw. I'm generally not too fussed about going for emeralds when I'm casually playing. I think they're fine when you're playing solo but get way too hard at the end. I just like the simpler concept of racing down the tube and collecting rings better. I still don't like the Spheres in Sonic Mania.
