My rough top 5 so far this year, in some order:

Jay Som - Everybody Works
Varg - Nordic Flora Series Pt. 3: Gore-Tex City
Oddisee - The Iceberg
Bing & Ruth - No Home of the Mind
Vince Staples - Big Fish Theory

I've been listening to a lot of kyuss/deftones/early qotsa recently - does anyone have recs for similar artists? the more contemporary the better

Also, been gone for a while - does the aim chat still work or did we transition to something else?

Paramore - After Laughter
Vince Staples - Big Fish Theory

Not quite the same but you might enjoy Crystal Fairy, kind of a supergroup with Omar Rodriguez-Lopez from At the Drive In/Mars Volta/whatever else, 2 guys from Melvins, and one of the girls from La Bucherettes. Super solid album, I really enjoyed it and it went under the radar of a lot of people.

Clutch is pretty good, saw them live a few weeks ago and they are just a strong, no frills hard rock band

Don't really know my top 5 atm, might have to think a bit or listen to more stuff

In regards to Brand New.....it really depends on how you feel about pop punk. First album is like completely pop punk while Deja started branching out but is still fairly rooted in it. I love both albums dearly and grew up with them but it's not everyone's cup of tea.

The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me are where they really started to go for the experimental rock sort of thing. So you MIGHT be better off there but you can try Deja if you're curious, still a great great album.

I saw him at an event with Kode9, Kevin McPhee, and Legowalt a few years back. It was weird. It was a festival at two different venues about 30 minutes from each other. One was seated, the other was a cramped bar at an old hotel. Actress was booked at the seated venue which was kinda strange, but he used the space for visual arts too. if he's playing a DJ set you can probably check the Boiler Room archives to get an idea for what he plays. he's done a bunch of sets for them.

His boiler room set in Mumbai was quite good, looking forward to the show! jealous that you got to see Kode9 along with him.

In other news, Pitchfork just released a top albums of the '60s list. Here's the top five:
1) The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground & Nico
2) The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
3) John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
4) The Beatles - The Beatles
5) Nina Simone - Wild is the Wind

full list here: http://pitchfork.com/features/lists-and-guides/the-200-best-albums-of-the-1960s/

What do you guys think? Some initial takeaways: #1 is probably correct, Abbey Road is the best Beatles album, and the biggest snubs from the top 20 are Astral Weeks, Giant Steps, and Os Mutantes' self-titled.

I made my own top 60s list five years ago. I stand by it for the most part:

other thoughts on your list, icon:
-what happened to Sam Cooke's live album at the Harlem Square Club? I remember you loved that one
-I never really got Ascension, but haven't given it a listen in several years. maybe it's time
-is Atlantis the best way into Sun Ra?
-Clifford Brown & Max Roach may be the greatest jazz album of all time, so glad to see Roach represented here (even if I haven't heard this one)

there is no better album ever recorded. unfortunately it was released in the 80s. 60s live albums are weird.

It's very harsh. I think maybe something like Lanquidity might be a better jumping on point?

Lanquidity is interesting so far - the title track sounds like a band just barely staying on the rails for 8 minutes. listening to "Where Pathways Meet" right now. It's atypical that a bandleader feels no obligation to provide a resolution of tension as Sun Ra does here; this is a credit to him.
