I'm just gonna wear some dark sun glasses, and look at it through a tree for a few seconds. Should be fine.

You don't go fully blind. It can just permanently damage your vision. One old dude on reddit who had a staring competition at an eclipse with his friend like 50 years ago likened it to "a blur like how they blur out license plates/faces on TV, about the size of a pea" in the bottom right corner of his FOV.

Most homemade viewers will fail to block the proper range of light. Sunglasses are made to reduce the painful glare of UV, they can't keep your retinas from being damaged by infrared, etc.
There are no hard studies and results on this for obvious safety reasons but it's estimated permanent damage can begin to occur at around 100 seconds of exposure. Of course there are a lot of factors, including proper pupil dilation (which can be affected by drugs) and no one should risk it. --- "its okay a lizard ate me and elucidated my fate" - MJ_Max on Dark Souls 3DSFC : 0860-3930-2170 | NNID : CapnMuffin | XBGT : Capn Muffin ... The cardboard box shows you the eclipse through shadows. You poke a small hole in the Box, then turn your back to the sun, and the eclipse pattern will show in the box like a little projector.
