Yeah but just because technology exists doesn't mean it has to be capitalized on it right away.

Are we at a point where 4K is a mainstream format?

Streaming 1080p content is pretty easy for my 60 Mb/s connection but 4K is another matter. Can my computers output 4K content without choking on it? Are 4K TVs good for gaming compared to 1080p displays? 1080p is a more mature format at this stage, the tech backing it may be better for that application.

It's still the standard since 4K hasn't taken off like everyone thought it would.

Most of gaming has already transitioned to 100Hz+ 1440p and 4k but those displays are expensive af still.

1080p existed in 2000, did that make the PS2 living in the past?

Broadcast television is not even in 1080p yet. Streaming is doing better, and there are some 4k broadcasts and the HDR does make a difference, but that is still kind of limited.

I don't think 4k is anywhere near considered a must have, but it is very nice. Gaming is moving that way quicker though, so it may be the next generation of consoles where you would want to seriously consider upgrading if you haven't already.

Broadcast Television is a dying media. I haven't watched any TV since 2008.

Well since internet isn't at TV coverage or even speed globally, TV still has a place for the foreseeable future.

480p to 1080p was like from low settings to high settings on a PC game.

1080p to 4k is like high settings to ultra. Wow, I spent $3000, now things technically look better I think.

i give it 4 years. in two year most people will probably convert because of the summer olymipics will be in 8K for some reason.

then give it 2 more year to have it seem like living in the past.

saying 1080p is just fine is like when people said thier CRT is just fine to be playing 720p Dead Rising and Banjo KazooieNuts and Bolts. It's fine for now. but when video game system truly convert to 4k you will want to upgrade.

once hd became the norm, numbers kind of stopped mattering. unless you have an enormous set, it really doesn't matter anymore, ok?

When the next visual standard comes out? Maybe VR? As it stands now 1080 is perfectly fine for moderately sized TVs. It's really only giant televisions or sitting really close to the screen (like computer monitors) where it matters at all beyond 1080.

Man, I remember being blown away by 720p when I first got the Xbox 360 back in 2005. How times have changed.
