So I can buy bills out of my drawer on the spot. with currency...paper money...there isnt much to collect in terms of more recent stuff. Thats why weird serial numbers are collectible, but also older currency is collectible. The average life of a bill is around 1.5-2 years or so before it passes through so many hands and gets worn down so much it needs to be sent back to the fed to be destroyed. So currency from the 90s and before can command a bit of a premium, because its not that common. You can go to the bank and take out money and the vast majority of it will come from either series 2013 or 2009. With coins even opening one roll of pennies(that arent fresh 2017) can yield tons of older coins, even wheat pennies from the late 50s and before.

So the other day I saw a brand new looking 1981A series 100. Thing looked in awesome shape. But I couldnt immediately buy it out of my drawer so I forgot about it and went on my merry way.

Of course a 1981A in fresh uncirculated condition isnt really a mega score, but its still worth more than face by default, no speculation required. Of course examples in worse condition command less of a premium, but so long as it isnt really bad shape it should still command a premium.

This is something I need to capitalize on.

Just talking about currency AKA PAPER MONEY.

If you find currency from older series(1999 and before) it is usually worth a bit more than face value because its a little rarer to find. I want to maximize my chance of being able to buy these bills out of my drawer at work when I see them on the spot, so I can make $$$.

Thats alright.

I already have a five and some ones, so I need to take out 100, 50, 20, 10 from the bank. So 180 split up that way.

Its going to leave my checking account with EIGHT dollars in it, but the joy of using money to make money is its a free hobby, so most of my money is in physical paper or coin right now, plus i also get paid in two days.

The "customer service managers" dont care because my drawer is always straight. actual management I dont know. The loss prevention guy kinda said when I do it dont make it obvious because a) his bosses could come in and complain it they see it plus b) theft target.

But overall no, nobody cares since the drawer is straight. I go through hundreds of serial numbers a day, split between bills in drawers and money people pay with.

However I do not let this take precedence over my actual job. If I dont have time to check the serials I simply dont. Providing good customer service is still #1, and I dont let this detract from that. I get a decent bit of free time at work though.

My routine is this, and I do it when I have some free time inbetween customers:

check the ends of the dimes for silver.
check the ends of the quarters for silver
Check nickels for silver

then I check bills for weird serial numbers and star notes. Star notes are rarer, but I see a few a day. When I find one I write down the serial number and series then input that information into this database: http://www.mycurrencycollection.com/reference/star-notes/lookup to see if it comes from a low print run. if it does i buy it, if not i dont.

I check hundreds and fifties first because there arent that many in a drawer usually. then tens, then I go in order ones, fives, twenties. The lower the denomination the more collectible it is.

Then when all thats done I go through the pennies, see if I have any years important errors exist in, then check them.

This is all if I have time. if its super busy and i dont get a chance to do it i simply dont.

When I worked at a credit union I saw a bit of older money coming here and there. I have several bills from 1929 and 1934. I have a set of all bills in one of those years (I have them in a box somewhere but not sure which one). I also got a lot of coins I passed on to my oldest son, he has some coins form late 1800s. My father-in-law has some mid 1800s currency that he is going to give to my son one day.

thats the shit right there. Now ive never seen one that old where I work, but the average person who goes to the bank can ask if they have older bills and likely you can just buy them for face value. even bank tellers sometimes dont even know or care about the numismatic value of such things(or perhaps they arent allowed to freely buy like I can).

Make sure those older bills are in bill sleeves.

I almost never see two dollar bills, besides if I did i'd likely have some ones on me.

However older two dollar bills such as series 1977 dont command a premium because people set them aside because they are weird which lowers their numismatic value. the most collectible stuff is often times the stuff that isnt that weird or unusual, but just regular old stuff.

I have some in sleeves, the ones that are a complete set are in a floating frame so I can see the front and backs of them.
One time an older lady came in to see if we paid more for silver certificates. She had 25 $1 bills, since we didn't pay extra for bills so she was going to just to deposit them. I ended up buying them from her for $50.
Bank tellers are allowed to freely buy as long as a supervisor watches. I could have had a 1934 $500 bill, but I didn't have $500 dollars to spend at the time.
