What an awful analogy.

I remember when Friends used to cover a bunch of depressing topics in their run. I remember how Friends appealed to a cross-over of punk/emo kids and alternative college folk.

This analogy is the Friends of analogies. Shallow, poorly written, and appealing to the lowest common denominator.

I'm not waving a banner for Brand New here, feel free to think whatever you'd like about them. This is just an awful analogy. Might as well just say, "Wow, Brand New is the Nazi Germany of music" if you think an adequate basis for an analogy is basically "Both things are bad and were more popular than I think they should be". It would be just as startling an insight as the OP.
