It help people cope with death and with people who get away with doing bad things being judged for it in the end.

Because we incorporated supernatural deities into the very foundation of our societies, governing and supporting which values we uphold and the motivations for those societies in question. Removing those means removing the pin which kept large human populations together and molded ideologies for the better part of our post-agricultural-revolution history on this planet.
