What are the consequences of capital punishment?
I'm personally a believer in rehabilitating criminals instead of punishing them. I think capital punishment is justifiable in certain situations. Whether or not invading Iraq was right, Saddam Hussein as an individual certainly deserved to be executed for his crimes, and I'd argue other criminals who have committed outrageous atrocities with no doubt that they have done so deserve the same punishment. This is therefore especially applicable to state offenders.

John Oliver's bit pretty much matches my view. Every logical argument is against the death penalty, but there is this emotional part of me that simply wants some people who have done enough wrong to simply be killed. Where you draw, or if, that line exists is more of the debate to me. And the nature of an emotional argument its difficult to rationally define, which makes for bad laws. --- If you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all ... All it takes is one innocent person to be executed, and the whole system has failed us. Once I heard something crazy from a coworker who supposedly worked in the legal profession but left after becoming disillusioned by a verifably innocent man being sent to die (basically they proved his innocence but the governor refused to stay or pardon the man as a matter of bureaucracy and the victim's mother said something along the lines of "someone has to pay for this" when his execution rolled around) but I don't know how true it is. --- DorkLink said I could borrow his signature so I did (see below): ... I'm always back and forth on being for the death penalty, and seeing it used so rarely that it's practically absurd.
It's not an emotional argument for me, but rather one of keeping things tidy. However, I think life sentences without parole should be doled out a lot more to violent felons, especially those who use firearms. That life sentence population should also be seperate from the rest of the prison population, with the normal prisons being more focused on rehabilitation. ... Copied to Clipboard!

So should our taxes have gone into keeping Saddam alive for the remainder of his life then? Or Bin Laden? Honest question. I imagine it would be more costly for them, but in today's court system, it is more costly to execute someone than to have them serve life in prison at least for the average person. --- Number of legendary 500 post topics: 26, 500th posts: 16; PiO ATTN: 2 Thank the lord, the PiOverlord!
