A bodybuilding friend told me this, that no matter how much you can do ab crunches, with weights added, you will never get a six pack unless you work on fixing your diet.

That sounds plausible...

Geez what a terrible life, if that's true. Forced to eat healthy all the time and exercise for hours on end?

It's a combination of both, just like weight loss. You need protein, but you also need to train your muscles.

Honestly it would stand to reason as long as you aren't a fatty, then getting 6 packs would be possible with a consistent sit-up/crunch regimen alone.

He seemed pretty adamant that skinny guys can get six packs with almost no work vs normal or fat guys, and that they'll get six packs before even getting any noticeable biceps if they start working out.

It's not all in the diet, working out burns calories and as a result, fat, while building muscle. You also have to eat protein to maintain muscle, because your body is indiscriminate when burning fuel.
