Poll of the Day > YouTube videos addressing Final Fantasy II/IV and III/VI are getting tiresome

Whenever a video is uploaded, either from a lesser or well known channel, talking about Final Fantasy, they have to take 5-10 seconds explaining that Final Fantasy III (SNES) was actually Final Fantasy VI; same thing goes for Final Fantasy II/IV. I get that it's informative and younger audiences or new fans of the series might not know, but isn't that what Wikipedia and previous videos talking about this are for? I really shouldn't get bent out of shape about something so trivial because I love the history of video games, but I feel like it's beating a dead horse, at this point; we'll probably see this in videos 100 years from now. Another, but lesser known example are the Zombi series of films.

To be fair, since every single time someone on the Internet starts talking about "Final Fantasy II" or "Final Fantasy III" my instinctive first question is automatically, "Wait, do you mean the North American Final Fantasy II/III or the Japanese Final Fantasy II/III", I feel like making that distinction is almost necessary/mandatory at this point.

I've literally never heard anyone call FF6 "Final Fantasy III". The games have all been released with their correct titles by now, so there's really no excuse for it beyond stubbornness.

FF2 is the one nobody likes and FF3 is the one nobody cares about.

As you get older you will find most people talking to be exhausting. Nearly everything that someone under 30 says will be annoying to you because it is something you will have heard thousands of times in your life by that point.

You also begin to go on auto pilot for a lot of tasks and as a result you perceive the passage of time differently. It is very strange.

New players will only ever be exposed to the proper names these days, so there should never be a point of confusion. At best it can be considered "trivia," but there's no way a new player will be trained to think of 4 as 2 and 6 as 3.

it used to be convention to say FF3 or FF3j. these days, we've just started calling them by their proper numbers (FF3 is now implied to be FF3j; SNES FF3 is FF6.)

In theory it could be confusing but nobody is ever talking about Final Fantasy 2 or 3. Seriously, when was the last time you heard anyone have a conversation about either of those games that didn't spring from the English misnaming of them?

All I'm saying, is that I can understand for new people, but it's almost 2018 and all the correct Final Fantasy titles are numbered and accessible.

The older I get, the more I feel like I have to call them FF 2 and 3 because I'm talking about the original SNES versions, the best versions. There's something sentimental about calling them that.

And yet there are still plenty of people out there who played them when the numbers were different, and who may not follow gaming strongly enough (or who have at least stopped paying attention to Final Fantasy as a franchise since then), and thus have no real awareness of the numbering re-adjustment across multiple re-releases.

It's the same way that I have friends who will easily state that they think FFVII is the greatest JRPG ever made - but who, if you ask them, will go on to admit that they also haven't PLAYED any other JRPG since FFVII (except possibly FFVIII, which is shit anyway). For them, the world stopped in 1997, and nothing that's happened since has altered their perception. In a similar sense, people who enjoyed FF2 and FF3 on the SNES but who haven't paid attention to FF as a series (or gaming as a whole) since the 90s are still going to think of those games as FF2 and FF3, not FFIV and FFVI.

Hell, I HAVE played tons of games since then, I DO pay attention to gaming in general, and I even OWN some of the remake versions of those games (the Final Fantasy Anthology and Final Fantasy Collection on PS1) that refer to them as FFIV and FFVI, and I STILL occasionally think of them as FF2 and FF3 (and usually feel like I have to make the distinction of which one I mean when I'm talking about them most of the time).

Yes, to a 20-year old who has literally never known them as anything other than FFIV and FFVI it could be confusing, but fuck those young bastards anyway.
