Exactly!

The three games I listed I did for three different mechanics.

Caverna is a phenomenal Euro-game that takes economic concepts and makes them fun and accessible. A top representative of its genre!

7 Wonders is an accessible and fun deck-building game with open appeal. The perfect introduction to the genre.

Pandemic is a critically acclaimed cooperative game with great difficult scaling and teamwork. A master-class in the genre that's also easy to learn.

some of my favorites that haven't been mentioned yet:

Five Tribes. base game is 2-4 players. first expansion is a great add. second expansion due soon (adds 5th player)

game starts with a ton of options, which decline over the course of the game. turn order is bid on, based on the previous turns order. many scoring paths to victory.

Hyperborea. base game is 2-6 (though it doesn't do 5 well at all) one expansion exists, but is stupid hard to find (and easily ignored)

six base actions, with some variety and improvements. each is tied to a color of cubes, which are drawn randomly. so, while you know what colors you have available, you don't know exactly which turn you will draw them. territory control, but there are ways to win without dedicating yourself to exploration.

Stone Age. base game is 2-4, expansion goes to 5. relatively simple resource gatherer, but with plenty of options to keep things interesting. my playgroup ran this one into the ground for over a year. it was hard to find for a while, but i think that's been resolved.

Hanging Gardens. 2-4, though the game is much different (and better) at 2. players choose and arrange cards to form clusters of one of four colors. but you can only play color squares on top of already played cards. scored groups can't be used again without work, and are marked so that cards can't be played in certain places. deceptively simple. also, nearly impossible to find. dunno if it's worth the inflated price (probably not), but if people ask for it enough, maybe we can get another run.

I'll also second BSG (it's actually my favorite game), though I highly recommend picking up the Exodus expansion asap. the Cylon mechanics are so much better with it than without. The third expansion is also great, but can be added later. the first expansion is fine, but a lot of it is obsoleted by the third.

Scythe is incredible.

Hive is a great 2P only game.

Small World is a great territory control game, though imo it plays a little too long.

^5. I've yet to fuck with the Automa. We've just been having a blast playing. We had to exclude one player though. He got too competitive and looked up like, every possible move, how to do everything in the least amount of moves, etc. I mean, it's legit strategy, but we're just trying to have fun game nights.

^ r/boardgames had someone post metrics from a big Scythe tournament.

Crimea was the clear favorite among everyone. Nords were the least popular.

Nearly all players build up to 5 workers, then stop until the mid-end game.

Many winners didn't go for a Factory card.

Many players chose Speed as their first mech.

As a novice Scythe player, I agree with all of this information. I would put Rusviets about as bad as Nords. My group seems to think Rusviets are OP though.

Rusviet, with right play mat, is a bit OP and can reach the factory in I think 4 turns. It all comes down to play style and how much research players put into the game. To my friends and I, knowing every little trick to a board game ruins the fun.

It's largely the reason I don't go to Meeplings/board game meet ups. I understand people want to win and there are competitive scenes for games. It's just not for me.

Yeah I learn mostly through playing. I actually discourage new players from playing as Rusviets because it makes them not like the game as much when they have to play as other factions and switch off actions. I don't think that ability is that great either, and almost encourages bad short-term plays. Warping to the factory is a pretty great mech ability though.

If you're playing as Nords, the factory is key - due to their ability to treat into neighboring lakes, it shouldn't be hard to control that area. But the factory is kinda overrated.

By the way for Scythe, the Wind Gambit expansion is set for November.

The Scythe Big Box will be only available at www.thebrokentoken.com

The realistic resources will be available around November as well.

And STM's next game, Charterstone will be out around the holidays (legacy empire building game)

I also highly recommend Stone meier's other games, espcially Viticulture Essential edition :3
