Being half blooded was always looked down upon, especially back when he was young, so I'm sure he liked using his moms last name to show his "wizard side", instead of his father's Muggle name Snape. So yes it was self crowned. He was also constantly bullied by Harry's father James and his friends. Maybe they called him that name as an insult as well? Maybe they coined the phrase. Sure, Chris did what he could with what he had and the books hadn't really grown up yet, but it just felt so paint by the numbers. The Duelling Club was good though, and it has some great songs on the soundtrack. But it still feels very much like the first one, without the same kind of magic. Don't get me wrong, I do like Chamber of Secrets, just not quite as much as the rest.
