President Donald Trump announced last Friday that he will nominate Richard Grenell, a former U.S. spokesman at the United Nations under the George W. Bush administration, to be the next ambassador to Germany.

Grenell, a supporter of Trump during last year’s presidential campaign, had his name floated for the position of U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, which went to former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley.

According to Politico, he was also considered for the post of NATO ambassador, which went to former Texas Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison in June. If confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Grenell would become the first openly gay appointee in the Trump administration.

Grenell, 50, has a long history of working for Republican politicians, from New York Gov. George Pataki to South Carolina Congressman Mark Sanford.

He also served as a foreign policy advisor to 2012 GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney, but was forced to step down after social conservatives objected to his sexual orientation and support for same-sex marriage.

He is best known for his presence on social media and his frequent role as a commentator on conservative news outlets. Since Trump was elected, he has defended the president and the administration’s choices on many issues, including on LGBTQ rights in an op-ed for The Washington Times just prior to last year’s election.

“No other Republican Presidential nominee in history has embraced the LGBT community in such a loud and proud way,” Grenell wrote. “His rainbow flag waiving in Colorado was only the latest sign of his continued support for gay equality. Whatever happens on November 8, 2016 in the presidential race, Mr. Trump has forever changed the Republican Party’s support for LGBT equality and future Republican leaders will have a difficult time not meeting the new standard.”

I don't believe it works personally, but people should have the right to do as they please.

We shouldn't be endorsing self-destructive things under the guise of therapy, especially when the suicide rates associated with said "therapy" are through the roof. No reason for it to be legal anymore than there is reason for garage liposuction surgeries to be legal.

As a whole, probably not, but they're slowly starting to come around about it. It is just throwing noise into the equation. Right now they're torn between courting the crazy evangelicals or courting the younger generations who are far more gay friendly than previous generations ever were.

As time goes on, the right is going to be forced into modernizing their views on homosexuality. :u They can't rely on the baby boomers forever.

I know plenty about them, and I know they aren't all as extreme as shock therapy. I just find the concept of trying to change something that can't be changed to begin with to be inhumane and crazy. That isn't a knee jerk reaction. There is nothing redeemable about what those "treatments" are trying to do, regardless of how good intentioned they might be or if people are seeking them out on their own.

And I'm not going to budge a single inch on that, so you are better off picking a fight with someone else Capn. :u

As I said before, there's plenty of things under the sun that don't work but they're still legal. People should have the freedom to choose what they want, particularly when it isn't affecting others.

Mike Pence outright called for a stipulation to be added to the Ryan White care act that said "Resources should be directed toward those institutions which provide assistance to those seeking to change their sexual behavior."

Isn't hard to read between the lines here. He wanted federally funded conversion therapy. Maybe he's relented on it since then, but he clearly called for it at one point.
