I remember reading the scientists plan was to release some mosquitoes injected with some altered DNA that would make their offspring sterile, or something like that.

I'm no expert, but wouldn't there be some repercussions if all mosquitos were to die off?

There's a lot of animals that eat mosquitoes and their larvae that completely eradicating them would be a bad idea. Even those that don't have a majority mosquito diet would move onto other food sources and make those scarcer, etc. etc.

Only about 5% of mosquito breeds bite humans and many scientists think eradicating just those would have minimal impact to nature.

Simple. First we genetically increase the population of the southern leopard frog to outnumber that of mosquitos. All the mosquitos are eaten and become extinct.

If you're worried about the frogs, don't worry, we just genetically increase the population of raccoons so they eat all the frogs.

If you're worried about the raccoons, don't worry, we just genetically increase the population of crocodiles so they eat all the raccoons.

If you're worried about the all the crocodiles, don't worry, we just genetically increase the population of jaguars so they eat all the crocodiles.

If you're worried about all the jaguars, don't worry, we just genetically increase the population of anacondas so they eat all the jaguars.

If you're worried about all the anacondas.......well. Start worrying I guess. Haven't thought that far ahead.

Animals that are ok with eating mosquitoes and larvae probably wouldn't object to eating the larvae of the probably thousands of other insect =]

To my knowledge, there are no animals who have mosquitos as such a staple of their diets that it would create a problem there. I'd be more concerned about the population booms in species that have been kept under control by mosquito vectors.
