I wish it could somehow just be understood that neither of us is being rude by just saying hi and not having a conversation. Just a smile and a wave no one needs to waste their time on a conversation neither party really wants to have.

Or on the other side of the coin where you met people when you were drunk or long time ago or whatever and they remember you but you have no idea who they are so you just keep saying hi just to be polite.
