We had a mechanic get fired at my place of employment for something similar only a few weeks ago.
Got fired more for lying about it than actually doing it, though. Took a customer's car on a "test drive" and went to a coffee shop to get coffee, one of our managers spotted him. Another reason I have front and rear cameras installed in all of my vehicles.

At my work, I only take the used cars to get food. Otherwise the test drive is a designated route in case of breakdowns. I would never put excessive miles on a customers car, it's wrong and you get fired.
