will it reverse direction or cease if it crosses into the northern hemisphere?

I imagine it would be a smooth transition to the other spinning - i.e. it'd slow down its rotation somewhat as it crossed the equator, then eventually twist in the other direction after. Purely a guess though, I have nothing to back it up.

It would dissipate. There almost no hurricanes in the band 5 degrees north and south of the equator.
