I paid $50/mo for one year for the following:
Basic Cable + HBO
25 mb/s internet

This jumped to $70/mo. When I called to complain, they said they can't reduce the price, but will offer a speed boost to 100 mb/s. They also told me standalone internet will be more expensive, so might as well keep the cable + internet. I agreed.

One year after that (today), the price jumped to $120/mo... I called to complain, and cited that new customers are getting $60/mo for the basic cable + HBO with 75 mb/s internet, and if I can get in on that. They said no, that's for new customers only. But what they can do is bring me back to the 2nd year introductory rate of $70/mo, and give me a speed boost to 200 mb/s for one year.

Next year, the price will jump to $150/mo (with today's pricing), so they suggested I call a year later to get it back down (lol they know).

Speed test confirmed that I'm getting 200 mb/s:

So................. why is it that I have to call in and complain to lower the price? Why not just keep it low in the first place... and why is internet-only more expensive than bundling up with TV, that I do not even watch? Bleh.

TL;DR: Year 1- $50/mo. Year 2- $70/mo with 100 mb/s upgrade. Year 3- $120/mo, but negotiated down to $70/mo with 200 mb/s upgrade. Why do you HAVE to negotiate this crap? And why is internet-only more expensive than bundling up with TV?

ISPs agree with each other to be the only provider in certain areas. So, one location might only have Comcast while another night only have Charter.

Fuck ISPs.

Because there is no competition in the USA for cable/ net/ phone (more so the first 2) and will go out of their way to overcharge you unless you can debate with them, ALL USA INTERNET/CABLE are like this, i had to do it for my mom several times with 2 different companies.

THIS IS ALSO why google fiber became a thing, is to help fight the BS

(btw that upload is S***)

That's definitely true. My only real choice here is Comcast. I guess I should be happy that they're willing to drop down the price...

the exclusive possession or control of the supply or trade in a commodity or service.

Exactly why we wanted a government so this wouldn't happen. lol

I have just internet and phone. I have Roku and Firestick, so I don't worry about cable.

I got used to life without cable. I wouldn't have the landline either, but I don't want EVERYBODY with my cell phone.

there's not enough competition with the buyouts and all. an organized boycott might work, but that's not likely to happen, lol.

Honestly, ISPs should get reamed by the government and stop being allowed to do shitty things like not give you a choice and shutting Google Fiber down.

My cable box is not even hooked up. I literally only have it because it's cheaper to bundle up than standalone internet service.

ISPs have their hands in the government, that is why we have these problems, same with car dealers.

nope, there is BBB and such, they know they have to lower it to a complaining customer because it is an indicator they will go though other means to complain. It could even snowball into people fighting the monopoly, so it is worth trying to appear to care.

There is also this:
Anchoring and the contrast principle
https://conversionxl.com/blog/pricing-experiments-you-might-not-know-but-can-learn-from/

I forget what it is called but there is also a thing where they try to sell you something based on a hike price, knowing you talk them down do a price they intend to charge you (or even above that) it is all tricks to overcharge you basically and the monopoly gives them power to do so.

Because a bunch of people will not call to complain, but just accept the price hike. It's their version of dynamic pricing.

BBB is, in itself, a company as well. It's not like that's a government owned (or "consumer owned", like credit unions) entity.

I guess me being frugal, I cannot accept "throwing away" upwards of $70/mo (from introductory $50 to current $120 cost) without a fight.

Huh, I didn't know they were nonprofit.

The Better Business Bureau (BBB), founded in 1912, is a nonprofit organization focused on advancing marketplace trust,[2] consisting of 112 independently incorporated local BBB organizations in the United States and Canada, coordinated under the Council of Better Business Bureaus (CBBB) in Arlington, Virginia.[3]
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Better_Business_Bureau
https://www.bbb.org/council/about/council-of-better-business-bureaus/
For more than 100 years, Better Business Bureau has been helping people find businesses, brands and charities they can trust. In 2016, people turned to BBB more than 167 million times for BBB Business Profiles on more than 5.2 million businesses and Charity Reports on 11,000 charities, all available for free at bbb.org. The Council of Better Business Bureaus is the umbrella organization for the local, independent BBBs in the United States, Canada and Mexico, as well as home to its national and international programs on dispute resolution, advertising review, and industry self-regulation.
