Surprisingly, even though I work fewer than nineteen hours per week, I still have a surplus of funds after paying that damned American tuition.

It's largely due to my financial aid and the fact that I'm living rent-free in my mother's house. >_>

Depends on the definition of debt.

I don't owe anything on my credit card beyond the couple of days/weeks between when I use it and pay it. No school debts or car/appliance/furniture loans or anything like that.

We do have a substantial mortgage, but I technically have close to enough assets to pay it off if I wanted to. But at 3.X% interest plus the tax deduction on mortgage interest, vs my assets making 10-15%+ a year, I'd lose hundreds of thousands of dollars over time if I paid it off, so...

Yep by a few grand. I'll pay it back one day probably although it's been years now and I haven't heard anything about it so maybe not.

I could say the same but made a bad choice by getting a loan so my dad can pay his rent arrears he got into. He made it out we would be homeless if he didn't pay it. While I were in the court with him it turns out it wouldn't have come to eviction. Even now my dad still claims it would have despite me actually being stood right next to him when the judge said it wouldn't. Still I suppose it was my fault for getting a loan at the end of the day so eh.

Depends how you define it.

I have a mortgage, so that's debt, but my total assets are worth a lot more than what I owe, so I wouldn't classify that as being "in debt".

Well.....yes and no.

It really depends on what one means "debt".

It also has to do with why loans are taken. Some take loans not because the immediate funds are required but because they want to maintain their current lifestyle and invest their other funds elsewhere. They play with their money, so to speak.

Personally, this is what I do. I do have a small loan and 1 credit card that I pay off completely every billing date. I also invested some of my money in other things so.....it's all about being creative with ones finances.

Credit cards are so convenient because you may get freebies and rewards if you do it right. It can also potentially ruin your life if the interest keeps piling up and you keep doing just minimum payment.

So, all in all, I don't think I'm in debt. The small loan in took I can repay back in 3-4 months time. But I don't really require to as the interest is low and I prefer to have a bit of liquidity.

I do have my own property now but I currently rent as I'm not residing in my native country. Renting in this place is a necessary evil and cannot be avoided unfortunately.

yeah moving to another country isn't exactly a option to me. that would cost about as much money(just the trip alone) as it would just to go get a 6 month course at a college to get certified in something. which is what i ultimately plan to do anyways. not everyone has to be a laywer or a doctor etc.
