It's funny I don't really prioritize all VIII characters or anything, but usually near the end of the rounds I'm just so apathetic to a lot of characters so I'll give them saves if my other favorites are already safe.

CXVII - 69/100
CXVIII - 24/100
CXIX - 72/100

Other than Lightning, Hope is the only FFXIII character who's been able to have consistent success. He has three top 25 finishes in six contests, including one top 10. He does have a couple of mediocre performances to counterbalance that, but Hope has mostly done well for himself. However, due to his small resume, this poor finish hurts him quite a bit. Hope tumbles in the STATS from 69.07% to 62.39%, dropping from 16th to 24th place.

Hope's numbers are the same in the New Era, but he only drops from 22nd to 25th because there are so few characters in the 60% range for some bizarre reason. He's narrowly behind Faris in the overall STATS, but he's narrowly ahead of her in the New Era.

it's like...I'm trying to sleep, and a bunch of people are incessantly honking their horns in the parking lot outside. then at 4 am, they stop, and I can finally get to sleep. good on them. they improved. that still averages out to a bad night of sleep

Hope is a great character. Yes, he's whiny at the start. But he's a KID. And he just got stuffed on a train to be shipped off to Pulse just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Then his mom gets killed, leaving him as a KID who has no one looking out for him. His actions make sense in that context, and he grows over the course of the game into a strong individual. It's not like he's some star athlete or something, who alternates between being a cocky, self-absorbed dipshit and being a whiny bitch with daddy issues depending on the scene. Man, THAT kind of character would be fucking terrible, am I right?

It doesn't help that Hope goes from really bad to just there and not really contributing anything.

If he went from bad to legitimately good I think I would probably lean towards the good end even given equal time for both because it's like, "oh that development made it all worth it!"

But it's like, you can't really erase bad with neutral very effectively. If some dude is out there honking in the parking lot you be damn sure I want a fruit basket.

hey if you want your characters to be likable from the start or have less despicable or annoying flaws to overcome then that's your business

And yeah, Hope doesn't do all that much after Chapter 7, but Chapter 7 was so darn good that it doesn't really bother me that much. Easily the best part of FFXIII.

Chapter 7 was good but I don't really think that makes Hope a good character. It means a bad character was used in a good way. Maybe it makes Snow a good character.
