There are many things that are causing the divide between republicans and democrats that are feeding off of each other. To claim any one thing is 'the most detrimental' is simply inaccurate with so many things, especially with the divide often coming down to individual issues as opposed to a blanket statement. However the media and various politicians seem to have gone out of their way of late to make things worse.

It is the inevitable, if highly unfortunate, consequence of parties that have become insular within their upper echelons and provide little attention to either the desires of their common voters or even to anything that does not immediately reward their own private interests. However the two stem from two completely different sources with the democratic party being corrupt through and through while boasting a young voter populace that is entitled and actively detrimental to the core values which have enabled the nation to prosper while the republican party is stuck with a party that is self-congratulating and ineffective combined with a populace more than willing to insult and condemn them the moment they opt to speak out. As a result a movement like ANTIFA, in which a young populace whom has known naught but political bounty as they have had eight years of relative political prosperity preceded by a member of the opposing party who was involved in an unpopular war is now forced to deal with a party which effectively assassinated their own candidate, was an inevitability. Conversely the alt-right, nationalist, and Neo-Nazi parties on the opposing side were an inevitability when the common populace of the party was consistently informed that they were wrong, evil, and corrupt and their own party didn't even bother to try and stick up for them in any regard. A sad but inevitable fracture for this state of affairs.

A question impossible to answer as it devolves down to being situational. However, certain core ideals must be held in order for an ends to have any meaning and if the method to obtain those ends compromises those ideals the end result will almost assuredly be tainted.
