I did so because I didn't want a left wing supreme court the rest of my life. That is the only reason - I didn't care about the rest as long as WW3 doesn't break out.

Anyone else vote for similar reasons?

No. I would have enjoyed not having my rightful voice on the Supreme Court stolen from me by underhanded means.

People on both sides who voted for someone because of the supreme court always strike me as those who don't really get the supreme court

Were you planning on dying in the next 10 years or so?

In what way do you mean? If RBG dies and Kennedy retires within the next 3.5 years or so, which is hardly far-fetched, then conservatives will probably control the Supreme Court for 15-20 years at a minimum. If Trump gets two terms, that increases the likelihood that he might get the chance to replace Breyer, and the court could become 7-2 conservatives to liberals.

That seems enormously important to me.

Mainly because while they all lean towards one side or the other, more telling in their votes are where they line up on the libertarian v authoritarian scale
Considering both Trump and Clinton leaned on the authoritarian side of things, we were screwed either way

Not to mention that there have been a few times a judge ends up changing their political opinion as they age

I think that might be somewhat true, but conservative authoritarians are authoritarian in different ways than liberal authoritarians.

And I think it'd be hard to argue that conservative appointees won't be more hostile to certain liberal sacred cows like abortion rights. Gorsuch is already shaping up to be a nightmare for liberals.

Trump is likely not getting two terms, unless the left fucks up again and puts someone like Hillary again against him.

In which case, Democrats deserve whatever happens tbh. If his presidency continues to be a very meh one (as it has been) and his approval keeps going down (as it has been), almost anyone should be able to beat him.

He doesn't need two terms to establish conservative dominance on the Supreme Court though. He only needs two of the following 3: Ginsburg dying, Kennedy retiring, or Breyer retiring in the next 3.5 years. Even just one of those will probably secure the conservative majority for at least another decade.

I don't see Kennedy retiring under Trump
he's always said he'd like to retire under a republican president. yet now he has the chance, he hasn't done it

plus he really enjoys being a tiebreaker, this is especially noteworthy given the make-up of the court right now

of course he could just be waiting until 2019 or so, but we'll see
