I think this is meant for special cases like i said earlier like if you have an emergency that is life threatening like if you're a brain surgeon and there's not somebody there to take over for you. I do know that surgeons can go over the 16 hour max rule here in PA.

i got an apprenticeship with a union making $40 an hour right out of school. The only studying i did between that and high school was how to clean house at beer pong and how to roll a proper joint. It's not always about what you know so much as who you know.

i don't think it's a common practice, but a sleep-deprived brain surgeon is better than saying 'fuck it, put some ice on it i'll be back tomorrow' if they don't have anyone to replace him, hence the exception on the OSHA page for emergency situations.

@Coffeebeanz would be the one that knows more about that kind of stuff though, i literally just left my old union to start working in a hospital and i'm just a facilities engineer.

Jesus you guys are a bunch of babies.

Literally any job with any amount of worth, weight, value, and responsibility requires you to work long hours with sometimes little rest between.

Should you be killing yourself for Sam's Club? Not particularly...but I'm sure in the next breath you and the many others complaining about working too hard will also be complaining about how you don't make enough money, aren't gainfully employed, etc.

With few exceptions (which are akin to sheer luck) there's no path to wealth that does not involve a great deal of sacrifice.

On a somewhat related note. if you had a school workload that required class from 4pm to 10pm (with 2 hours worth of homework) making it so you ended at 12am, and then had to be up at 6am for class the next day would you guys think this school was some monstrous, hellish, and abusive environment to be in?

A 'contract' is void if it violates the law. There are laws in place to exclude certain professions like surgeons, police, EMS, etc, though.

I don't know if you can read real well, but i'm not the one who linked to that website. I don't really care what it stands for. I linked to the only website that matters in this situation, OSHA's. i had the "pleasure" of having to get a OSHA-10 certification so i know a little bit about how they operate.

I own my own company and have had weeks where I've worked consecutive 18-22 hour days and in general the occasional all nighter isn't entirely uncommon for me.

There's two simple rules I have when driving in this situation.

-Always get something to eat and drink some caffeine before getting on the road. It's not the healthiest but it keeps you awake and alert.
-If at any point you find yourself losing awareness pull over (which thankfully has not happened to me yet) if you think you can't make the trip home then just don't go.

You choosing to drive while highly fatigued is no different than choosing to drive after you've been drinking. In both situations you are not in a condition to drive...and the choice to drive is completely optional.

Eh! Yes and no! I work the crazy hours when I have to, but when a production eases up it's fairly smooth sailing from there.

I will agree with you guys in saying that a 6 hour turn around for more than 2-3 week period is probably a bit much. As long as there is light at the end of the tunnel and you can push through it though it is doable.

I'd love to know what school you go to that has you there at 6am. Also, you choose the time you go to in college, which I assume you haven't gone to.

If you're an athlete you're definitely at school at 6am for practices in the morning. Likewise, if you're in school for something like film or photography early morning classes aren't unheard of because of when you need to film/take pictures. But for the sake of adjusting my point for you guys...let's say you have homework till 2am and have to be at class at 8am. Same turnaround time...

I don't think the analogy is as off as you guys think.

Yes you pick the time that you go to school, but you don't necessarily get to pick the work-load once you're in a class.

So if your school workload dictates that you have to be up till midnight to do projects, homework, etc. That's no different than your job dictating that you to work till midnight.

Yet somehow I feel like no one would complain about school demanding a tremendous workload on people.

You choosing to drive while highly fatigued is no different than choosing to drive after you've been drinking. In both situations you are not in a condition to drive...and the choice to drive is completely optional.

Yeah sleeping in the parking lot is totally worth it for a summer job you fucking clown. Quit trolling about something that can actually get people killed if anyone was actually dumb enough to believe anything you're saying. Thankfully, TC seems to have a pretty good head on their shoulders.

For this guy it's not. For a lot of other people it is.

If your school had you doing homework till midnight and you had to be at class at 6am the next day would you be so against it?

In college you mostly choose your class schedule. So if you packed yourself to the point you cant sleep you should adjust it

Yes

And in life you choose the job that you work. If you can't handle the amount of hours being asked of you, then you should get a different job.
