The refugee crisis these past few years has been taxing. Lebanon takes tons of refugees, many countries in Europe were overwhelmed. Now Bangladesh is taking at least 300k refugees and counting. Australia have their own refugee issues.
Here's the problem: Refugee numbers are gonna increase. A lot. Not necessarily because of armed conflicts, but because the climate is changing. Trying to combat climate change is all well and good, but countries really need to realize that climate refugees are gonna become very numerous. Just look at what happens when a developed country like the US is hit by two major hurricanes. Imagine those types of disasters in undeveloped countries. Stronger storms are supposed to become more common. Rising sea levels will make places uninhabitable. Droughts will displace large populations (that turned out well in Syria, didn't it?).
Point is, if all this refugee circus can teach us anything, it shouldn't be "We need to close our borders". It should be "We need to amp up our capabilities to accept refugees in case something happens". Because things are gonna happen.

Or, you know, we could stabilize the regions that they're from so they don't need to pick up their lives and move to areas with vastly different cultures, languages, etc.

Depends on how willing they are to accept responsibility instead of relying on "capable" countries welfare.

If we became refugees here in Northern Europe, do you think we would be welcome in any of those countries that are currently leaking refugees? Besides, it's found again and again, that a large portion of these people aren't even refugees, just economic immigrants looking for handouts or a less strict justice system.
I'm all for helping people who flee for their lives, but we really need a way to filter out the scum.

This is a NIMBY problem. Everyone wants to talk about helping refugees or fixing the problem, but nobody wants to actually take any responsibility for it personally.

I'm not talking about the current refugees. I'm saying that it's apparent from how we were overwhelmed by refugees that we need to be prepared with better infrastructure to take in people. Because in the future, there are going to be more refugees. A lot more.
