A new poll in the wake of the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, finds that while Americans widely say they oppose racism and white nationalism, many still appear to hold far-right, white supremacist views.

The Ipsos poll, for Thomson Reuters and the University of Virginia Center for Politics, was conducted online from Aug. 21 to Sept. 5 ― in the weeks following the deadly white supremacist rally in Charlottesville. It sampled around 5,360 American adults, asking questions about race that respondents could agree or disagree with to varying degrees.

“While there is relatively little national endorsement of neo-Nazis and white supremacists,” according to the release describing the poll’s findings, “there are troubling levels of support for certain racially-charged ideas and attitudes frequently expressed by extremist groups.”

Shocker. I'm utterly in awe. Who would've thought large groups of white Americans would say something to appaease minorities, yet secretly harbor racist sentiments towards them?!

BTW, the propaganda author at HuffPo omitted mentioning this question from the poll:

America must protect and preserve its multi-cultural heritage.

Because only 5% of these same people being polled disagreed with that statement. That seems like an odd sentiment for people sharing white supremacist views to me.

You don't think the people examining the data - the wrier of the article, and the person in charge of the poll - were looking for a particular slant? Read their responses - apparently, 95% of the respondents wanting to preserve American culture is a result of racial conflict.

That's confirmation bias.

no.

no it is not.

confirmation bias would be seeking respondents that they knew would give answers to the questions they wanted to hear to confirm their hypothesis and eliminating those that would not. it would be undermining the methodology of their poll. the poll's methodology is fine.

what they did was interpret the answers to those questions to support labels you do not agree with.

also, you are inserting your own assumptions about the study authors by assuming things about their motivations.

Being racist is not the same as "supporting white supremacist views."

Some of these questions definitely indicate implicit racism in a small minority, but they don't support the horseshit statement you posted that "many share [white supremacist] views."

"They" are/were trying to turn race into an ideological discussion. It kinda blew up with BLM being a commie front and all of their demands on their sites being socialist hogwash and them equating whiteness with capitalism. Depending on how deep into it you are, it could certainly appear that way. It's no wonder there are so many instances of "this is why Trump won. . ." as semi-legitimate attempts to rein the radicals in.

The poll in the OP has a "don't care" option, so these aren't apples to apples. Rather than looking it as only 65% approve, it's probably more useful in this case to note that it's only 16% that actually disapprove. There is a fairly large "don't care" segment on this one.

Nope. Obama was the first president with a very non-Anglo name and his father was born outside the US. That combination is what drove the conspiracy. Had it been Jamal Jackson who won the presidency, the birther conspiracy would have never been born. Indeed, Jesse Jackson ran for president twice in the 80s and nobody, including Trump, ever questioned his citizenship.

Trump doesn't have a favorable opinion of illegal aliens (to some extant since he's flip flopped on DACA) and Muslims (that can be due to religion only). He loves POC and once dated a black woman.

For anyone who wants to see poll results without clicking a link:

70% say the races are equal.
89% say the races should be treated equally.
31% say we should preserve our European heritage.
39% say white people are under attack in the US.
57% say Confederate statues should stay.
26% say Confederate statues should go.
16% say interracial marriage should not be allowed.
65% say interracial marriage should be allowed.

These results don't seem particularly surprising or alarming to me.

I'd like to know what they mean by this.

I doubt they gave it much thought when they answered yes.

don't make presumptions for people you don't know.

edit: why'd you delete? finally realized how it makes you look? lol

I deleted because I read that a "don't care" option was available. But I'm not going to presume like you that they were thinking of pushing white supremacy.
