Doubly so since most threats could be fought as opposed to in horror where the traditional defenses are running and hiding. Granted, the dark settings with things like the Watcher-in-the-Water and the forests with giant, killer spiders have appeared in horror films. I remember it sticking out to me as a kid because it was the first non-documentary film that I actually could not bear to sit through.
