That is sad. As someone who likes the idea of going to places in the world like this, I find these types of events disturbing. From the article it sounds like she was attracting tons of attention constantly in that area, like people bothering her in her tent and stuff. In that kind of situation it is easy for word to get around and for someone to decide they want to set up an ambush. If tons of people are seeing her and talking about it, it only takes a tiny % of them who would do an evil thing like this for it to happen.

I think it's more that Brits tend to go on these types of trips more than Americans and Canadians. Australians and maybe New Zealanders might go on these trips just as often but since they are much smaller in population you won't hear about it as often.
